The quarter-zip trend and the Great Meme Reset are two different internet-culture stories. The first is a TikTok fashion meme that contrasted quarter-zip sweaters and matcha with Nike Tech fleece and coffee. The second was a proposal to revive familiar mid-2010s memes on January 1, 2026. That date has passed; reporting documents a wider nostalgia wave, not a confirmed, coordinated reset.
What is the quarter-zip trend on TikTok?
In the meme, a quarter-zip sweater and matcha signal an “elegant” or “classy” persona, set against Nike Tech fleece and coffee. Those are playful online associations, not objective descriptions of people who wear either look.
Know Your Meme traces a breakout moment to creator Jason Gyamfi’s November 3, 2025 TikTok, in which he described himself as a “quarter zip dude.” It was followed by a November 6 video with his friend Richard Minor. Earlier quarter-zip jokes existed, so these videos are better understood as a popularizing moment than the origin of every joke about the garment. Know Your Meme’s account says the November 3 video received more than 903,100 likes in nine days and the November 6 video received 1.6 million likes in six days. The Guardian separately reported that the originating video had more than 30 million views; views and likes are different measures. The Guardian’s coverage quotes Gyamfi: “We don’t do Nike Tech. We don’t do coffee. It’s straight quarter-zips and matchas around here.”
Why are guys ditching their Nike Techs for quarter-zips?
The contrast gives the videos an easy visual shorthand: a change of clothing becomes a joke about changing one’s persona or aspirations. The clothing and drink pairings belong to the meme, not to fixed rules about what quarter-zip wearers or Nike Tech fans like.

Some coverage has also connected the contrast to race, class, masculinity, and professional respectability. The Guardian describes quarter-zips as associated with white, middle-class finance culture and Nike Tech with stereotypes applied to Black working-class men. Its reporting from a London meetup includes young participants’ own accounts of how they believe clothing affects how others perceive them. These are reported social interpretations, not universal meanings shared by all wearers.
The Washington Post quoted Gyamfi, described as a 21-year-old computer science graduate, saying “you don’t got to hoop or rap to be successful.” That frames the trend, in his account, as a way for young Black men to imagine success beyond sports or music. Stylist Devan Anderson cautioned that jumping abruptly from a sweatsuit to a cable-knit quarter-zip could be “a huge leap that’s going to feel like a costume.” The Washington Post’s reporting presents these as individual perspectives, rather than a single explanation for the trend.

Did the meme affect quarter-zip interest?
Fast Company reported a 25% rise in quarter-zip sales among 18-to-24-year-olds since mid-2024, though the passage does not identify the underlying retail-data publisher. The publication also reported a 2,250% increase in Google Trends searches for the exact query “1/4 zip pullover men’s business casual” over the prior 12 months. That search figure applies to that phrase and period, not to every quarter-zip search or region. These are dated figures reported in 2025, not current measurements. Fast Company’s report links the garment’s growing visibility to the moment, but the figures alone do not establish what caused the changes.

The Great Meme Reset was a social-media proposal to bring back memes associated with roughly 2015–2018, with January 1, 2026 promoted as a symbolic starting date. It was not the same trend as the quarter-zip meme: one played with fashion and identity, while the other called for a return to older internet references.

A November 21, 2025 Weber Forecast described calls to revive memes such as Harambe, Dat Boi, and Ugandan Knuckles. Some participants framed the idea as a reaction to AI-generated “slop” and what they saw as a 2025 meme drought. The Weber Forecast’s account documents the proposal and its framing; it does not establish that users broadly agreed on what should return.
Did the reset actually happen?
January 1, 2026 has passed. A student newspaper retrospective describes posts proposing a reset and the nostalgia attached to familiar formats. Later reporting about 2026 also describes a wider wave of throwback images and references. That is evidence of renewed nostalgia, not proof that meme culture collectively reset on the proposed date or that an organized campaign took place. The available reporting does not resolve whether a coordinated reset occurred or what its status is in October 2026. The retrospective and the 2026 nostalgia coverage document those distinct pieces of context.

What to take away from both trends
- The quarter-zip meme uses a clothing-and-drink contrast as shorthand for a particular online persona; its popularity does not make those associations universal.
