Spoilers for the series finale, “No Lessons Learned.” Larry David is found guilty and sentenced to jail—but a juror’s sequester violation leads to a mistrial, and Larry goes free. The last scene returns the characters to their familiar bickering. That ending deliberately recalls Seinfeld’s finale, then breaks away from it: Larry repeats the old ending because he never learns a lesson, while Curb Your Enthusiasm refuses to leave him in prison.

What happens in the Curb Your Enthusiasm finale?

“No Lessons Learned” is the tenth and final episode of season 12, which HBO announced as the series’ last season. The story begins with Larry giving water to his friend Rae while she waits in line to vote in Georgia. The episode makes that gesture the basis of a legal case tied to the state’s voting law. As the case proceeds, people from Larry’s past appear as witnesses, recalling the show’s familiar pattern of old grievances catching up with him.

The trial seems to deliver a definitive punishment: Larry is found guilty and sentenced to jail. Then the apparent ending is overturned. A juror’s violation of sequestration results in a mistrial, freeing Larry. In the closing scene, the characters are together again, arguing on the way home. The series ends not with Larry transformed or permanently punished, but with the ensemble back in its usual comic rhythm.

Why does the finale echo Seinfeld?

Seinfeld’s 1998 finale put Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer on trial. Acquaintances recounted their selfish behavior, and the four were sent to prison. “No Lessons Learned” borrows that recognizable shape: the trial, returning witnesses, a guilty verdict and a prison sentence. The resemblance is intentional, not a literal rewrite of the earlier episode.

The idea grew from a season storyline in which Larry was asked to teach a child a lesson. His response—that he had never learned one—gave showrunner and executive producer Jeff Schaffer the premise for the finale. As Schaffer explained to the Los Angeles Times, “We realized we should own that and tell everyone Larry’s never learned a lesson and just do the finale again.” The repetition turns the courtroom story into a joke about Larry’s inability to change, and about his willingness to revisit the ending of a show he helped create.

Schaffer described the aim to Vanity Fair as getting “the Seinfeld finale on steroids,” then stopping that version and doing a Curb ending instead. The mistrial is the crucial break: Larry reaches the same apparent fate as the Seinfeld characters, but the story does not keep him there.

Does Curb fix the Seinfeld finale?

It offers a comic alternative, rather than changing or undoing Seinfeld’s ending. In Seinfeld, the characters’ trial ends in prison. Curb builds toward that same outcome, then releases Larry through a mistrial and finishes with the group arguing together.

Finale element Seinfeld (1998) Curb Your Enthusiasm, “No Lessons Learned”
Trial and witnesses Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer are tried; people from their past recount their behavior. Larry is tried; past acquaintances testify about his behavior.
Apparent outcome The characters are found guilty and sent to prison. Larry is found guilty and sentenced to jail.
Final turn The sentence stands. A juror’s sequester violation causes a mistrial, and Larry is released.
Last comic note The characters remain caught in the consequences of their trial. The ensemble returns to its familiar bickering.

Whether the newer ending is “better” is a matter of taste, not something the finale settles. Jerry Seinfeld later recalled that, in the scene with Larry, they thought the alternative ending “would have been better,” as he told The Associated Press. The remark suits the joke: Curb gets to stage the familiar punishment and then provide a different last beat.

Why does Curb end with the group arguing?

The finale does not close on a newly enlightened Larry. Schaffer told the Los Angeles Times that ending on Larry’s face felt too sentimental; the group scene better suggested that these characters would carry on being themselves. Susie Essman delivers the final audible line.

Leon Black’s Seinfeld binge adds another layer to the callback. J. B. Smoove said he had decided that Leon had never watched Seinfeld, so the character’s first viewing could feed into the finale’s meta-joke. Leon is not merely watching an old sitcom: his discovery parallels the episode’s return to the show and its most famous ending. Smoove discussed that choice with TIME.

When did Curb Your Enthusiasm end?

HBO announced in 2023 that season 12 would be the show’s final ten-episode season. “No Lessons Learned,” its tenth episode, aired in 2024. The Los Angeles Times described the series as ending after 24 years; the finale’s long-delayed Seinfeld callback is sometimes framed as a 25-year payoff, reflecting the 1998-to-2023 interval discussed in Jerry Seinfeld’s 2024 interview with the AP. The episode itself aired in 2024.

HBO’s announcement is available in the Warner Bros. Discovery pressroom.
