What happens in “Vertical Drop, Horizontal Tug”?
Larry’s liberal reputation meets airport etiquette
After leaving Atlanta, Larry basks in the reputation he believes he has earned as a champion of liberal causes. At the airport, he tosses a bagel to keep his distance from a homeless man. The gesture becomes a problem later when Larry throws a bagel at Troy Kotsur, an acclaimed actor, and the episode’s separate golf trouble begins to take shape.
Larry borrows Kotsur’s golf lesson
At the club, Larry eavesdrops on Kotsur’s private golf lesson. He hears the instruction “Vertical Drop, Horizontal Tug,” takes the advice for himself, and improves his swing without paying for a lesson. The newfound confidence turns into a serious breach of golf-course manners when Larry hits Kotsur in the back with a ball from a distance and does not call “fore.” Larry rationalizes that Kotsur would not hear him anyway.

Takahashi confronts Larry
Takahashi, the club owner who already has reason to dislike Larry, reacts to the incident. Later, he catches Larry listening to another lesson in the club toilets and summons him over the possibility of revoking his membership. Larry’s attempt to escape the consequences collides with Leon’s exposed-testicles gag, which becomes a ridiculous way to defuse the confrontation.
The lemon tree turns into a neighborhood bill
Neighbor Duane Tubman wants Larry to cover half the cost of maintaining a lemon tree. Its fruit falls into Larry’s yard, where Larry uses it, so Duane sees a case for sharing the expense. Larry has attended a Tubman family memorial in pursuit of liberal goodwill, mistakenly assuming a connection to Harriet Tubman. Leon’s disruptive arrival interrupts the argument before it can be settled.
Leon steps into Freddy’s fertility favor
Freddy Funkhauser is helping an infertile neighbor couple, but when Freddy cannot be available, Leon volunteers to substitute. That plotline sits alongside the episode’s earlier coyote-like noise: Larry and Jeff had declined to investigate it despite concern for a puppy at Jeff’s home. The episode uses these favors and refusals to keep Larry and his friends tangled in other people’s problems.

The ball Larry does not call
After striking Kotsur in the back, Larry skips the warning because he assumes Kotsur would not hear it. The rationalization is the episode’s clearest example of Larry turning a breach of manners into an argument.

The Takahashi meeting gets an absurd escape hatch
With membership at stake, Larry finds that Leon’s exposed-testicles gag can distract from the very conduct Takahashi is confronting him about.
What the title’s golf advice means—and what it does not
The phrase comes from what Larry overhears during Kotsur’s lesson; it is not a tutorial the episode develops into a reliable golf guide. The joke is that Larry gets a better swing by taking advice without permission, then ignores the basic courtesy that might have prevented the resulting conflict.
A note on Troy Kotsur’s cut improvised scene
Kotsur told TheWrap that he improvised a take in which he used a golf club under his leg to simulate his penis and said, “suck on this.” He said Larry was laughing, but the take was cut from the final episode; it is not dialogue or an action in the aired version. The interview also describes the show’s use of scene outlines and improvised dialogue.
Do not confuse this with the next Takahashi episode
The locker-room note story belongs to “Disgruntled,” Season 12, Episode 4—not “Vertical Drop, Horizontal Tug.” Prime Video’s Season 12 episode listing identifies “Disgruntled” as the following episode. In Episode 3, Takahashi’s conflict with Larry centers on Larry’s golf-course behavior and his later eavesdropping.
Where to watch or own the episode
Apple TV and Prime Video list the episode, but those listings do not establish availability in every country or confirm that access is current in every region. For a physical copy, the Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Twelfth and Final Season DVD includes all ten episodes, rather than this episode alone. A Screen-Connections release report reproducing the Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment/HBO announcement gives October 8, 2024 as its release date; check regional compatibility and current retailer listings before buying.
