Disney’s first official Cruella trailer arrived on February 17, 2021, introducing Emma Stone as the young Estella—before she becomes Cruella de Vil—in a live-action origin story set in 1970s London. The film follows Estella’s ambitions in fashion and her clash with the formidable Baroness von Hellman, played by Emma Thompson.
What the Cruella trailer is about
The trailer introduces Estella as a clever young grifter who wants to make her name as a fashion designer. Her connection with the Baroness, a powerful figure in London’s fashion world, sets events in motion and helps lead Estella toward the Cruella persona. Disney describes the film as a story about Cruella’s “rebellious early days”; that is the studio’s promotional framing, not a critical assessment. The Walt Disney Company’s trailer announcement and D23’s film entry provide the official synopsis.
The setting is 1970s London during the punk rock movement. Rather than simply retelling Disney’s 1961 animated film, Cruella presents an earlier chapter focused on how Estella becomes the character known as Cruella de Vil. D23 identifies Dodie Smith’s The Hundred and One Dalmatians as the franchise’s literary source, but that lineage does not mean the film directly adapts the novel’s plot.

The credited supporting cast includes Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Mark Strong. Disney lists the film’s genres as comedy, crime and live action. D23 records an earlier May 26, 2021 international release; release dates therefore depend on territory.

Which trailer does Disney list?
Disney’s February 17, 2021 announcement says it released the trailer, two posters and publicity stills that day. Disney’s film page also lists a later item titled “Arrived Trailer,” so “the Cruella trailer” can refer to more than one official cut. The date above identifies the first announcement; check the label on Disney’s page if you are looking for a particular version. Disney’s Cruella page includes its trailer listing.
Release and viewing context
Disney announced a U.S. theatrical and Disney+ Premier Access launch for May 28, 2021. Disney+ Press later said subscribers could watch the film beginning August 27, 2021. Those are historical launch details, not confirmation that the title is currently available to stream in every country; check Disney+ in your territory for current availability. For physical editions, Disney Japan lists Cruella in Blu-ray, DVD and 4K UHD formats. That confirms those formats on the regional page, but not local stock or edition details elsewhere; check playback compatibility and your local retailer’s listing.
