Cruella (2021) is a live-action origin story about Estella, an aspiring fashion designer in 1970s London who becomes entangled with the powerful Baroness von Hellman. Rather than retell the familiar puppy-kidnapping story, the film follows Estella’s early life, ambitions and transformation into Cruella de Vil.
What is Cruella about?
Estella is a clever young grifter with a talent for design and a determination to make her mark in fashion. Her path crosses with that of the Baroness von Hellman, a celebrated fashion figure whose relationship with Estella sets off a rivalry and revelations that shape Estella’s identity as Cruella. The story unfolds in London during the 1970s punk-rock revolution. Disney’s official synopsis presents the film as an origin story centered on Estella, not a direct adaptation of the familiar plot about stealing Dalmatian puppies.
Who stars in the film?
Emma Stone plays Estella/Cruella, and Emma Thompson plays the Baroness. The principal cast also includes Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Mark Strong. Craig Gillespie directed the film; Dana Fox and Tony McNamara wrote the screenplay, from a story by Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel and Steve Zissis. Disney’s film page and D23’s film entry list the credits and principal roles.
What is Cruella based on?
The film draws on Dodie Smith’s novel The One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which Disney identifies as its source. The 2021 movie shifts the focus to Cruella’s origins and fashion ambitions rather than simply retelling the book’s central puppy-rescue story.
