In Cronos: The New Dawn, Traveler ND-3576 journeys from a ruined future into 1980s Poland to extract the Essences of people caught up in the Change. The mission becomes personal when she uncovers the link between the Pathfinder, Doctor Weronika Kamiński, and the catastrophe’s repeating cycle. Plot explainers reconstruct the ending choices from the game’s story fragments; the official game page establishes the premise, but does not provide a full ending synopsis.
What is Cronos: The New Dawn about?
It is a third-person survival-horror story about a Traveler working for the Collective, an organization trying to salvage people and knowledge from the past after a catastrophe called the Change. The Traveler uses time rifts to reach 1980s Poland and extract the Essences of selected people who died during the disaster. Plot explainers describe an Essence as a person’s consciousness or soul; that is an explanatory shorthand, rather than a precise definition given on the publisher’s official page.

The two timelines meet in Nowa Huta, a district of Kraków: one version is an industrial landscape in the 1980s, the other a devastated future. Game Director Jacek Zięba described the setting as “two versions of Poland—the gritty 1980s and a dystopian future—both taking place in the Nowa Huta district of Krakow.” The publisher characterizes the world as a blend of Eastern European brutalist surroundings and retro-futurist technology.
The future is threatened by Orphans, creatures that can absorb dead bodies and grow stronger through a process called Merging. That threat shapes both the gameplay and the story: the Traveler must burn fallen enemies before others consume them, while exploring abandoned places reveals pieces of the Change and the people behind it.

Who is the Traveler, and what is the mission?
The protagonist is identified in plot explainers as ND-3576. At first, she appears to be carrying out the Collective’s Vocation: enter the past, extract designated Essences, and bring them back to the future. The game’s official setup also makes the Warden, the purpose of Travelers, and the nature of extraction central mysteries.
As ND-3576 follows the trail of earlier events, the accounts of people including Edward Wiśniewski, Artur Baryka, Dr. Dawid Zybert, and Eliza Zybert help reveal how the crisis unfolded. These people’s stories are part of the plot-guide reconstruction, not a complete official character-by-character synopsis. The game’s fragments—cutscenes, notes, and audio logs—leave the player to assemble the history.

Who are the Pathfinder and Weronika?
The leading plot-guide explanation identifies the Warden as the Pathfinder, a former Traveler. His attachment to Doctor Weronika Kamiński leads him away from his assigned purpose. The explainers connect his attempts to save or preserve Weronika with the Change’s recurrence, and describe ND-3576 as bound to Weronika through Essence and extraction experiments. The game does not present this as a simple, fully spelled-out scientific mechanism; it is an interpretation assembled from the story’s clues. The Escapist’s ending analysis discusses this reading of the story.
This connection reframes the mission. What first looks like an institutional effort to recover people from the past becomes entangled with one Traveler’s personal attempt to hold on to Weronika. The Pathfinder’s choices, rather than a clearly explained technical process, are the key to understanding why the crisis keeps returning.

- ADAPT OR DIE: In a desolate world filled with ever-present danger, your survival hinges on your ability to strategise and plan ahead. You can manipulate temporal anomalies to clear a path through the desolate environment and you will have to scavenge for resources to replenish your limited ammo and supplies.
- DON’T LET THEM MERGE: The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others — through a grotesque process called Merging — to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- HARVESTER OF SOULS: Your mission is to locate key people from the past who perished in the ensuing apocalypse. Using your all-powerful Harvester, you can extract their Essences and have them accompany you into the future.
How do the standard endings differ?
The standard-game confrontation offers two bleak outcomes in the plot explainers’ account. Neither brings the Change to a definitive end.
| ND-3576’s choice | What happens | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Spare the Pathfinder | The Pathfinder and Weronika reach the future, but Weronika becomes infected. | The cycle begins again. |
| Kill the Pathfinder | His relic opens a rift that sends Weronika back toward Edward’s time; she arrives carrying the Change. | The disaster is carried into the past rather than resolved. |
These outcomes come from secondary plot explanations, not an official full ending synopsis. They differ in the Pathfinder’s fate and in where Weronika goes, but both preserve the tragedy of the repeating crisis.

What happens in the New Game+ ending?
The New Game+ branch is presented by plot explainers as the most conclusive ending. After another confrontation, ND-3576 persuades the Pathfinder that Weronika may have a better future without his control. ND-3576 opens a rift and leaves with Weronika, leaving the Pathfinder behind.
A new Vocation begins: Weronika wakes as a Traveler, and ND-3576 reaches out to her. The ending offers them a chance to begin again without simply repeating the Pathfinder’s choices. It does not show that the world has already been healed. “True ending” is a label some guides may use for this branch, not an official designation established by the available sources. The Escapist’s analysis likewise treats the conclusion as a chance to break the pattern, rather than proof that the catastrophe is over.

Is the Change actually prevented?
The endings support a distinction between interrupting a personal cycle and saving the world. The standard endings leave the disaster repeating in different forms; New Game+ offers a different start for Weronika and ND-3576, but does not confirm a healed future. The precise causal relationship among the Collective, Weronika, and ND-3576—and the ultimate status of the world—remains partly interpretive in the available plot explanations.
