The March 22, 2024 attack at Crocus City Hall, a concert venue in Krasnogorsk near Moscow, was initially reported as having at least 115 people dead. That was an early count, not the final toll: later reports gave higher figures, with Human Rights Watch reporting 144 deaths and 551 wounded in March 2025. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility, and U.S. officials said intelligence supported that claim. Russian allegations of a Ukrainian connection were disputed and are not established by the sources cited here.
What happened at Crocus City Hall?
On Friday, March 22, 2024, armed assailants entered Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk, a suburb near Moscow, as crowds gathered for a scheduled performance by Russian rock band Picnic. They opened fire on concertgoers, and a large fire engulfed the venue. The Associated Press reported that the building could accommodate 6,200 people. Its retrospective account describes a fire, a roof collapse and emergency crews recovering bodies from inside the complex. Associated Press, March 22, 2024; Associated Press retrospective timeline.
How did the reported death toll change?
The figure of at least 115 dead was an early report. Casualty totals rose in later accounts as the response and recovery continued. The numbers below reflect reports published at different times and should not be treated as one undated, final tally.
| Report | Casualty figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Associated Press, March 22, 2024 | More than 60 dead; 145 injured, including 115 hospitalized and five children | Initial report. The 115 figure referred to people hospitalized, not deaths. |
| Associated Press retrospective timeline | 137 dead; more than 180 injured | Later retrospective count. |
| Reuters factbox, March 26, 2024 | At least 139 dead; 182 wounded | Count reported in the March 26 factbox. |
| Human Rights Watch report, March 2025 | 144 dead; 551 wounded | Latest count among the sources cited here; Human Rights Watch cites an April 1, 2024 report of 144 deaths. This does not establish that no later updates exist. |

Who claimed responsibility, and what did officials say?
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility through affiliated channels after the attack. The Associated Press reported that U.S. intelligence officials confirmed the claim; Reuters also reported U.S. officials’ assessment. In an April 11, 2024 statement, the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe identified ISIS-K as responsible. These are attributed assessments and statements; they should not be confused with the separate political allegations made by Russian officials.
In that April 11 statement, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Katherine Brucker described it as “The March 22nd ISIS-K terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall concert venue in Moscow that killed over 130 people and injured hundreds more,” calling it the deadliest terrorist attack in Europe since the Beslan school siege in 2004. What has Russia said about a possible Ukrainian connection?
Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, suggested a Ukrainian connection and said the attackers had tried to escape toward Ukraine. The Associated Press timeline says Putin made the escape-route assertion without evidence and records Kyiv’s denial. Those statements remain disputed political claims; the sources cited here do not establish Ukrainian responsibility. The same AP timeline reports the Islamic State affiliate’s claim and U.S. intelligence confirmation. Associated Press retrospective timeline.
Was Russia warned before the attack?
The U.S. Mission to the OSCE said the U.S. government gave Russian authorities information on March 7, 2024 about a terrorist threat involving large gatherings and concerts in Moscow, and issued a public advisory on March 8. The Associated Press also reported an unnamed U.S. intelligence official’s account that information had been shared privately earlier in March. This timeline is attributed to U.S. officials; the cited accounts do not independently audit the warning process. U.S. Mission to the OSCE, April 11, 2024; Associated Press, March 22, 2024.
