She was held captive by Cyrus Lebrun and later took over Voit’s network, hoping to draw him back into his Sicarius identity. In the finale, Voit pretends to kill Dr. Julia Ochoa while secretly helping the BAU find them. Ochoa survives, Tessa is captured, and the final bus scene shows Voit imagining violence—not carrying out a confirmed killing.
Who is the Disciple?
The Disciple is Tessa. Her connection to Elias Voit is not a secret biological family tie: Cyrus Lebrun held her captive, and she came out of the same abusive world that shaped Voit. After Voit killed Cyrus, Tessa eventually escaped and took control of Voit’s network. She used Cyrus’s identity in communications to get Voit’s attention and push him toward becoming Sicarius again. TV Insider’s July 10, 2025 interview with showrunner Erica Messer describes Tessa’s bond with Voit as rooted in their shared history in Cyrus’s household.
Messer explained that Tessa wanted to reawaken Voit because she did not want to be alone with the person she had become. Her motive is therefore more than simply taking over a criminal operation: she wants Voit to share, and validate, the violent identity she has embraced. TVLine’s finale interview likewise describes her goal as triggering a return to Sicarius.
How does Voit save Ochoa and expose Tessa?
The episode follows the BAU’s search while flashbacks fill in the history among Voit, Cyrus, and Tessa. Tessa’s plan depends on making Voit kill Dr. Julia Ochoa, whose apparent death would serve as proof that he has reverted to his old self.

Voit appears to do what Tessa wants, but the shooting is a ruse. He gives Garcia information that allows her to trace the network, enabling the BAU to reach the pair. The team rescues Ochoa and captures Tessa. The finale’s outcome is confirmed in TV Insider’s account and TVLine’s explanation.
What happens in the final bus scene?
Voit is returned to custody. During the transfer, another inmate recognizes him as Sicarius. Voit imagines choking the man, but the scene does not confirm that he actually attacks or kills him. Treat it as a glimpse of a violent impulse—or the possibility that his former self remains—not as an escape or a proven new murder.

That ambiguity is central to the ending. The immediate confrontation is resolved: Ochoa is alive, Tessa is in custody, and Voit is back in prison. Whether his conscience can continue to restrain him is left open. Messer told TVLine that the change was intended to let the series explore a Voit who has developed a conscience, rather than reveal that his amnesia and apparent change were a long con.
Was Tessa responsible for the information leak?
The finale’s explanation points to Tessa’s deception and access to Ochoa’s material as the route by which she could manipulate events. It does not make every audience theory about a broader inside leak canon. The episode establishes Tessa’s role in the network and her effort to steer Voit; viewers’ unanswered questions or interpretations should be kept separate from what the story explicitly confirms.

Where does the finale fit in the series?
Paramount+ lists the episode as “The Disciple,” Season 18, Episode 10. Paramount’s official series page uses the continuation title Criminal Minds: Evolution; its season 18 description begins six months after prisoners attack Voit, as his followers’ new violence draws the BAU back into working with him.
