In Nandini Ramnath’s assessment for Scroll.in, the plot is pulpy enough to strain plausibility, but sharp character work and strong performances give the series much of its appeal.
What is Crime Beat about?
Set in New Delhi in 2011, the series follows Abhishek (Saqib Saleem), a crime journalist eager to make the front page. His pursuit of the whereabouts of kidnapper Binny (Rahul Bhat) and accomplice Archana (Sai Tamhankar) draws him into a web of competing interests involving journalists, police and political figures. ZEE5’s synopsis likewise frames the story around a crime journalist whose life and career are affected by a fugitive gangster. ZEE5’s official title page
The newsroom is not just a backdrop to the case. Editor Amir (Danish Husain), photographer Pashupati (Kishor Kadam) and reporter Maya (Saba Azad) each add a different perspective on the work and ambitions surrounding a developing story. Crime reporting, career hunger and institutional maneuvering are bound together rather than treated as separate plotlines.
How convincing is the thriller?
Ramnath’s central reservation is that the conspiracy-driven story is too pulpy to function as a plausible account of how investigative exposés are made. The show’s chain of connections can feel heightened: the tension comes from the thriller’s accumulating entanglements more than from a strictly grounded portrayal of journalism.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters for viewers deciding what kind of crime series they want. If realism in reporting and the mechanics of an investigation are the priority, the plotting may disappoint. If a brisk, conspiratorial tangle is part of the attraction, its heightened approach is more likely to work.
What works: characters and performances
Ramnath argues that sharp character sketching and solid performances help offset the plot’s implausibility. She singles out Saleem, Husain, Kadam and Azad, whose newsroom characters give the ensemble texture beyond the chase for Binny and Archana. The result, in her reading, is a series whose people are more persuasive than the machinery of its conspiracy.

That is a specific critical judgment, not a consensus score or a claim that every viewer will respond the same way. Ramnath’s concise verdict was: “Too pulpy to be plausible as an expose of how exposes are created, Crime Beat benefits from sharp character sketching and a bunch of solid performances.” Read Ramnath’s review on Scroll.in.
Is Crime Beat based on a book?
Yes. Scroll reports that the series is based on Somnath Batabyal’s 2013 novel The Price You Pay. The screen story’s 2011 Delhi setting and newsroom focus place the adaptation in a specific world of crime coverage and ambition; the available information establishes the source novel, but does not detail how the series changes it.

Consider it if you enjoy ensemble-led crime thrillers where ambition and conspiratorial momentum matter as much as the case itself. Go in with measured expectations if you want a realistic portrait of investigative journalism: Ramnath finds the plot implausible, while praising the character work and acting. The clearest reason to try it is that contrast—an over-the-top story carried by an engaging cast.
