Crew review: A Sexy, Funny and Honest Airline Heist Movie

Crew turns three flight attendants’ unpaid wages and precarious finances into the trigger for a gold-smuggling caper. The 2024 Hindi comedy-thriller has the glamour and comic energy of a star-led heist, but its most promising idea is grounded in work: what happens when the airline that employs you stops paying?

What is Crew about?

Directed by Rajesh Krishnan and written by Nidhi Mehra and Mehul Suri, Crew follows Geeta Sethi (Tabu), Jasmine Kohli (Kareena Kapoor) and Divya Rana (Kriti Sanon), flight attendants at the fictional Kohinoor Airlines. With the company facing bankruptcy and its employees left unpaid, the women become involved in a gold-smuggling operation. The story is fictional, based on an original screenplay, and set primarily in Mumbai. Netflix Tudum’s overview outlines the premise and the characters’ different financial pressures and ambitions.

That setup makes “airline heist” a useful shorthand, though this is not a tightly focused story about a crew planning one conventional robbery. The caper grows out of workplace precarity, then shares space with the stars’ comic personas and the pleasures of a glossy crime romp.

Do the three leads make the caper work?

The film’s strongest asset is the contrast among its central performers. Tabu gives Geeta a composed, knowing presence; Kareena Kapoor makes Jasmine’s confidence and self-interest part of the joke; and Kriti Sanon plays Divya as someone trying to move beyond her circumstances. Their different energies give the trio a reason to share scenes beyond simply being three famous faces in the same uniform.

The glamour is part of the film’s appeal, not an attempt at naturalistic workplace drama. The leads carry the style lightly enough for the comedy to land, while their characters’ money troubles keep the story from being only a fashion-forward caper. The supporting cast includes Diljit Dosanjh and Kapil Sharma.

Is it funny—and is it honest about work?

Crew is most persuasive when it lets its corporate setup feed the comedy: the women are expected to keep working for an airline that cannot meet its obligations. That premise gives their turn toward smuggling a concrete motive, rather than making crime an arbitrary lark. The Indian Express described the film as an “easy-breezy comedy” and highlighted its bankruptcy setup and employees left in the lurch (review).

But the film’s honesty has limits. It uses the financial pressure as the launchpad for escapist mischief; it is not a sustained account of airline labor or the consequences of corporate failure. Once the smuggling plot and comic set pieces take over, the workplace critique becomes less central. The result is candid enough to give the heroines’ choices context, without giving that context the weight of a serious social drama.

How does the heist-comedy balance hold up?

The film’s appeal lies in the combination of ensemble chemistry, glamour and a workplace premise with real stakes. Its caper mechanics are less compelling as a puzzle than as a vehicle for the trio’s performances. If you want an intricate, tightly engineered robbery plot, the setup may promise more than the film delivers; if you want a breezy comedy led by three stars with a distinctive reason to break the rules, Crew is better aligned with that expectation.

Anupama Chopra’s brief review excerpt on Rotten Tomatoes captures one possible point of comparison: “Crew should have been a desi version of Bridesmaids meets Oceans 8. Loved the movie.” That is her reaction, not a summary of critical consensus. Rotten Tomatoes lists the theatrical release date as March 29, 2024.

The Crew (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is a digital album with eight songs, released March 28, 2024. Amazon Music lists contributors Raj Ranjodh, Vishal Mishra, and Akshay & IP (album listing). Apple Music gives the same title, track count and date, and credits Tips Music Limited under exclusive license to Warner Music (album listing).

Verdict

Crew earns its appeal through the lead trio and the friction between polished heist fantasy and the less glamorous fact that the women have been left without pay. It is sexy and funny as a star-driven caper, and honest enough to give that caper a workplace cause. Its social bite is lighter than its style, but the balance makes for an entertaining Hindi comedy-thriller.

Netflix Tudum reported that the film became the third-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024 and one of Bollywood’s top-grossing women-led films; that ranking is Netflix’s report, not an independently verified box-office figure here (Netflix Tudum).
