The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the nonprofit intermediary that has distributed federal support to public media, voted to dissolve on January 5, 2026, according to Gizmodo. The reported vote followed Congress’s July 2025 rescission of more than $500 million from CPB’s budget. It did not mean that NPR, PBS, or local public media stations shut down.
What is the Corporation for Public Broadcasting?
CPB is a private nonprofit corporation authorized by Congress under the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967. It has stewarded federal investment in public broadcasting and distributed support to local stations. It is separate from NPR, PBS, and the stations themselves; it does not own or operate those networks. CPB describes its role and history on its About CPB page.
What happened to CPB’s funding?
The Trump administration sought to defund public media, and Congress enacted a rescission package in July 2025. Gizmodo reported that the measure removed more than $500 million from CPB’s budget. The sequence matters: Congress enacted the funding rescission; it was not solely a presidential spending action.
On January 5, 2026, Gizmodo reported that CPB’s board voted to dissolve. CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison described the organization’s mission as ensuring access to news, educational programming, and local storytelling regardless of geography, income, or background. Board chair Ruby Calvert said, “What has happened to public media is devastating.” Both remarks were reported by Gizmodo; they are statements from CPB leadership, not independent assessments.

Did NPR and PBS shut down?
No. NPR and PBS are distinct from CPB, as are the local stations that carry their programming. The reported board vote concerned CPB; it did not itself close those networks or stations. Gizmodo reported that NPR, PBS, and most local public stations would continue operating, while warning that reduced resources could put services and some stations at risk.
Could local public radio stations close?
Gizmodo attributed to NPR CEO Katherine Maher a forecast that 70–80 public radio stations could close within a year. That was a warning reported in January 2026, not a confirmed count of closures. The available reporting does not establish how many stations, if any, ultimately closed.

Risk is not uniform across stations. A station’s exposure depends on its funding mix, size, geography, and access to nonfederal support. CPB’s FY 2027 congressional justification says local stations raise more than six nonfederal dollars for each federal dollar appropriated. That system-wide ratio does not show that fundraising can replace federal support at every station, or that each station has the same ability to absorb a loss.

Gizmodo reported the January 5, 2026 board vote, but a contemporaneous CPB board resolution or official closure notice was not located in the cited material. The report alone does not establish whether the dissolution process was completed or CPB’s present legal status. Likewise, the forecast of station closures should not be treated as an outcome without later confirmation.
