By 28 January 2025, PerthNow reported that Something in the Water was out on streaming platforms. The single announcement and the later album update refer to different releases: a track planned for July 2024 and the full album reported available by January 2025. The January 2025 report also says the brothers dedicated the album to their father, Kim, who died in January 2024.
How the release fits Courtney Murphy’s story
Murphy placed third on Australian Idol in 2004, behind runner-up Anthony Callea and winner Casey Donovan, according to PerthNow. Two decades later, the June 2024 single announcement came after he had briefly returned to work amid treatment for bowel cancer. The family’s fundraising announcement described his diagnosis as advanced-stage bowel cancer; PerthNow’s later report said he received the diagnosis in March 2024. Those descriptions are attributed to the reporting and family statement, not presented as an independent medical assessment.
#1 Best Overall
Chris Murphy said at the time, “With all the love and support we’ve received these past few months, it’s great to be able to share some new music.” The album had been delayed following their father’s death and amid Courtney’s illness, according to PerthNow’s January 2025 account.
What later reports said about his health
Health updates in the cited reports are dated snapshots, not confirmation of Murphy’s current condition. In January 2025, he told PerthNow that treatment had no end in sight. The article also reported that he joined his brothers onstage a day after surgery and, at that time, a condition affecting his right hand prevented him from playing piano.
Rank #2
In October 2025, PerthNow reported that Murphy was continuing chemotherapy at home and quoted him discussing his prognosis: “I’m not beating this, I’m just going to be as strong as long as I can, and that’s all I’m going to focus on, because there’s two truths happening at once.” That report also covered a planned Murphy Brothers appearance at the Red Hot Summer Tour in December 2025; the event date has passed.
