In a January 2025 interview, former Australian Idol contestant Courtney Murphy said treatment for his late-stage bowel cancer was continuing with no end in sight, nearly a year after his diagnosis. A later report in October 2025 described his treatment as ongoing. Neither account establishes his health status today, 8 October 2026.
What Courtney Murphy said in January 2025
PerthNow reporter Taylor Renouf reported on 28 January 2025 that Murphy, then 45, had been diagnosed with bowel cancer in March 2024. Murphy said: “It’s nearly a year on now from my diagnosis and there’s no end in sight as far as treatment goes.” The story described his cancer as aggressive and late-stage and said there had been no real improvement at that point. He said he had asked his doctors to try the available treatment options, adding, “I’ve told my doctors to throw everything they’ve got at it.” He also said he was willing to do what it took and was looking forward to releasing the next album.
The later report was also dated, not a current update
On 24 October 2025, PerthNow reported that Murphy was still receiving treatment, including fortnightly chemotherapy at home. In that interview, he said: “I’m not beating this, I’m just going to be as strong as long as I can”. Music and family remained part of his story
Murphy is a Perth musician who placed third on the 2004 season of Australian Idol. He performs with his brothers Chris and Kieran as The Murphy Brothers. The January 2025 report said the trio’s album Something in the Water was released on streaming platforms, and that Murphy joined his brothers on stage one day after surgery.
At the time, Murphy said treatment had left him unable to play piano because of De Quervain’s syndrome in his right hand. The album had been delayed after the brothers’ father, Kim, died in January 2024 following an aggressive brain tumour. Chris Murphy recalled that their father had attended a recording session: “It was great to have Dad there.” PerthNow also reported on Murphy’s music in June 2024.

Diagnosis and family support
A family fundraiser statement posted by Kieran Murphy on 1 April 2024 said Courtney had advanced-stage bowel cancer and that funds were intended to support him, his wife Jane and their children. The fundraiser page is available here. Its total can change over time, so no amount is included.
