The 2023 report about Courtney Mills described a fall down stairs in Bali and a brain bleed reported by a friend’s fundraiser. Mills later died, aged 37, after a separate fall from a hotel balcony in Kuta in January 2025. The available reports do not establish that the two incidents were connected.
What was reported about the 2023 stair fall?
In April 2023, PerthNow reported that Mills had fallen down stairs in Bali and was initially told she had a concussion. According to a fundraiser created by her friend Lauren Fankhauser, Mills later felt something was wrong, and scans at a private Bali hospital showed bleeding on the right side of her brain. These medical details were reported from the fundraiser; the news reports did not cite a treating clinician or independently reviewed medical records. PerthNow’s 2023 report and 7NEWS’s report both attributed the account to the fundraiser.
The fundraiser was also reported to say that medical costs had exceeded $3,000 and Mills did not have insurance. That was a case-specific figure in 2023, not a general estimate of overseas treatment costs.
Did Mills die after that stair fall?
No report in the available coverage says that the 2023 stair fall caused her death. In January 2025, ABC News reported that Mills’s family said she had fallen from a hotel balcony in Kuta on a Friday and died on Sunday after being taken to hospital with significant injuries. This was a separate incident, nearly two years after the stair-fall report. ABC News reported the family’s account on 14 January 2025.

What was reported about the 2025 balcony fall?
ABC quoted Kuta Police Chief Agus Diwayanto Dwiputra relaying hotel staff’s account: staff said Mills had been drinking, helped her to her room around midnight, and found her near the hotel pool about an hour later. That is an account attributed to hotel staff through police, not an independently established sequence. ABC said authorities had not confirmed a cause of death at the time of its report.
Local outlet DetikBali quoted police as saying the incident occurred on 10 January 2025, Mills was treated for three days at Murni Teguh Hospital, and she was pronounced dead on 12 January. DetikBali’s report was published on 15 January 2025.

How was Courtney Mills remembered?
ABC described Mills as a Melbourne DJ who had also worked as an OnlyFans model, and reported that she was 37. Her sister Kiani remembered her connection to music, saying: “Every time she got behind those DJ decks, she was free,” as quoted by ABC.
