Disney’s October 1, 2026 Halloween guide spans R-rated horror through family-friendly spooky adventures, so the countdown below is ordered by intensity rather than treating every film as equally scary. Check your local catalog before settling on a movie: Hulu and Disney+ availability varies by title, subscription, and location.
10 scary Hulu and Disney+ movies for Halloween
The countdown draws on Disney+’s October 1, 2026 seasonal guide. The official guide labels its Hulu “Horror & Thriller Movies For Halloween” section R-rated; the Disney+ selections include considerably lighter fare. Ratings and descriptions below reflect the guide’s framing, not a claim that every film will feel equally frightening to every viewer.

Longlegs — Hulu
Choose this for occult procedural dread: it sits at the darker, more unsettling end of the guide’s Hulu picks. It suits a Halloween night built around ominous investigation rather than playful monsters. The guide includes it among its R-rated Hulu horror and thriller selections.
-
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (2025) — Hulu
This is the domestic-suspense choice, centering the unease of a threat close to home. Pick it if psychological tension and suspicion appeal more than supernatural spectacle. Disney’s guide places it in its R-rated Hulu horror and thriller group.

The Substance — Hulu, listed for October 2, 2026
Disney’s October release schedule lists this horror arrival for Hulu on October 2, 2026. Its date makes it a timely option for a newly arriving October watch, but streaming schedules and catalogs can change; confirm it is available in your market before planning around it. Disney+’s October 2026 release guide and Disney’s October schedule list the date.
-
Barbarian — Hulu, listed for October 1, 2026
Another scheduled Hulu horror arrival, Barbarian is listed for October 1, 2026. It is the earlier of the two October-dated arrivals in this list. Since a schedule is not a guarantee of continued local availability, check Hulu or Disney+ in your region before you start the countdown. Disney+’s October 2026 release guide and Disney’s October schedule provide the listed date.

The Man in My Basement — Hulu
For a slower psychological chamber piece, try this Hulu selection. Its appeal in this lineup is a more confined, uneasy mood rather than the splatter-comedy approach of The Monkey. It appears in Disney’s R-rated Hulu horror and thriller slate.
-
The Monkey — Hulu
This is the pick for horror with a splatter-comedy streak. The guide’s Hulu slate includes it among R-rated choices, but its comic mode makes it a different sort of scare from the domestic and psychological titles above.

Werewolf by Night — Disney+
For a monster story with classic-horror styling, this Disney+ special offers a more approachable alternative to Hulu’s R-rated group. It is the countdown’s natural bridge between full-on horror and lighter Halloween viewing.
-
Haunted Mansion (2023) — Disney+
This PG-13 supernatural adventure is a better fit for viewers who want ghosts and spooky fun without choosing one of the guide’s R-rated Hulu films. Make it the group pick when the room wants haunted-house atmosphere rather than the most intense option in the countdown.

-
Hocus Pocus — Disney+
A lighter Halloween choice, Hocus Pocus is more spooky-season comedy and fantasy than hard horror. Disney’s guide specifically suggests pairing it with Hocus Pocus 2 for a double feature if one movie is not enough for the evening.
-
Frankenweenie — Disney+
Finish with this gentler spooky fantasy if your Halloween watchlist needs a lower-intensity option. It belongs in the countdown for viewers who want a Halloween mood without the R-rated dread, psychological suspense, or splatter comedy of the Hulu selections.

How Hulu and Disney+ availability works
Disney’s Halloween guide says select Hulu content is available through Disney+, while other content is available only in the Hulu app. The guide’s disclaimer applies to U.S. residents aged 18 or older, notes that location data is required for some content, and says availability can depend on subscriber eligibility, agreement terms, app features, and devices. Availability may also differ by territory. Use the service’s local catalog to verify a title before planning a movie night; the guide is a seasonal watchlist, not a promise that every listed film is included with every subscription.
For more seasonal options and guide updates, see Disney+’s Halloween movies, shows, and watch guides and Hulu’s Huluween guide.
