No. John Cena’s final match took place against Gunther on December 13, 2025—not against Adam Copeland, the wrestler formerly known as Edge. Copeland later said he believed WWE did not want the proposed pairing, while Cena said his 36-date farewell tour could not include every opponent. No future match has been announced, and Cena has reiterated that he is retired from in-ring competition, so a reunion looks unlikely, not impossible.
What happened to Cena’s final-match plans?
WWE announced on September 30, 2025, that Cena’s final match would headline Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The announcement described a year-long farewell tour. The event’s final opponent was Gunther, and later coverage reported that Cena submitted. The anticipated match with Copeland did not happen. WWE’s announcement also described Cena as a 17-time world champion, a five-time United States Champion and a two-time Royal Rumble winner; those career counts are WWE’s figures.
Why didn’t Edge and Cena have one last match?
Copeland said WWE was not interested
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Copeland said, “Well, here’s what I realized. They could link to each other. One place doesn’t want it to.” He added, “If it were up to me and John, sure.” ITR Wrestling and Athlon reported his remarks on August 19, 2026. Copeland said he thought AEW president Tony Khan would have allowed the match, but also said he had not formally pursued an appearance. This is Copeland’s account, not an official WWE explanation. ITR Wrestling’s report and Athlon’s report quote the interview.
Cena said the tour could not include everyone
In comments to The Takedown reported by PWMania on February 28, 2026, Cena said he and Copeland remained in contact and explained that the tour had 36 dates, too few to work with everybody. That describes the tour’s limits from Cena’s perspective; it does not directly confirm or refute Copeland’s view about WWE’s interest. PWMania reported Cena’s comments.

Could the match still happen?
There is no announced match or confirmed negotiation in the cited coverage. Cena has since reaffirmed that he is not returning to in-ring competition. On Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, as transcribed by Wrestling Inc. on August 27, 2026, he said, “I’m not going back to falling down.” In June, he told Us Weekly that it “would be financial suicide for someone to court me in a position where I would have another match, and I truly mean that,” as reported by Fightful. He also described focusing on remaining involved as an ambassador. These are strong indications that a match is not currently in his plans, not a guarantee about every future circumstance. Wrestling Inc.’s report and Fightful’s report carry those remarks.
For the possibility to change, Cena would have to revise his stated retirement position, WWE and AEW would need to agree on a cross-promotion appearance, and one of them would have to announce an actual booking. None of those steps is confirmed. As of October 8, 2026, a final Edge-versus-Cena match remains an unfulfilled possibility rather than a scheduled event.
