Yes, Nashville International Airport could be renamed in Dolly Parton’s honor, but it has not been renamed. On Sept. 11, 2026, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) voted unanimously to begin a process to modify the airport’s name. The authority said the final name had not been determined.
What did the airport authority decide?
The MNAA board voted 6–0 on Sept. 11, 2026, to begin a process for incorporating Parton’s name and legacy into the airport’s name. The authority described the vote as an initial step in a multifaceted process, not approval of a completed renaming. It said it was working with the appropriate parties and expected to share more definitive plans in the coming months.

In its statement, MNAA said: “While a final name has not yet been determined, we are working closely with the appropriate parties to thoughtfully determine how Dolly Parton’s name and legacy will be incorporated.” MNAA statement, Sept. 11, 2026
Will it be called Dolly Parton International Airport?
That is the specific name requested by the Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County, but it has not been selected by the airport authority. The Council adopted Resolution RS2026-2261 on Sept. 1, asking MNAA to rename the airport “Dolly Parton International Airport.” MNAA’s Sept. 11 statement did not announce that wording—or any other final name.

Who has authority to rename the airport?
The Council resolution says the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority has sole authority over naming its property. The Council’s resolution is therefore a request and expression of support, not an order compelling MNAA to adopt the requested name. The resolution also says the authority’s Policy 33-006 includes a two-year waiting period before recognition naming rights may be conferred for an honoree, and it asks MNAA to make an exception. According to the resolution, the MNAA board may amend the policy by resolution. Metropolitan Council legislative record, RS2026-2261
Quick Recap
How did the proposal develop?
- Aug. 28, 2026: Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Nashville International Airport announced an intent to honor Parton in the airport’s name. The governor’s office said Parton’s team was touched by the idea and open to continuing the conversation—not that she had given final consent. Lee called her “our state’s favorite daughter” in the announcement. Tennessee Governor’s Office announcement, Aug. 28, 2026
- Sept. 1, 2026: The Metropolitan Council adopted its resolution requesting the name “Dolly Parton International Airport” and an exception to the waiting period it describes in Policy 33-006. The resolution acknowledges MNAA’s naming authority. Metropolitan Council legislative record, RS2026-2261
- Sept. 11, 2026: MNAA voted unanimously to start the process of modifying the name in Parton’s honor, while leaving the final wording undecided. MNAA statement, Sept. 11, 2026
What is still unknown?
- The final airport name and whether it will use the Council’s requested wording.
- When the naming process will conclude or whether MNAA will change its policy to address the waiting period.
- Whether Parton or her representatives will ultimately approve a specific name. The governor’s office reported that her team was open to continuing the conversation, which is not the same as final consent.
