Bones found beneath a church on Bulgaria’s Sveti Ivan island were associated with John the Baptist through their archaeological context and an inscription. But DNA sequencing produced too little usable human DNA, and the researchers judged the sequences most likely to reflect modern contamination. The tests did not identify John the Baptist or reveal a genetic trace of Jesus.
Why the bones were linked to John the Baptist
In 2010, archaeologists excavating the Sveti Ivan site on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast found a miniature marble sarcophagus containing human and animal remains, along with an inscribed tufa ossuary. The objects lay beneath the floor of a church dated to the fourth or fifth century. The inscription refers to Saint John and includes a reference to a June 24 nativity date. These details support an association with John the Baptist, but they do not prove the bones belonged to him. The excavators’ historical review suggests the relics most likely reached Sveti Ivan from Constantinople during the fourth or fifth century CE. Kostova et al.’s excavation study
The marble reliquary held nine pieces of bone: six classified as human and three as animal. Researchers selected three remains for radiocarbon dating and DNA analysis. Neither the find context nor the inscription can establish the biological identity of the people whose bones were sampled.
What the scientific tests established
The date applies to one bone, not the identity of the remains
One human metacarpal—a bone in the hand—was radiocarbon dated to 5–75 CE, with a 68.2% probability. That is a calibrated age range for that sampled bone. The DNA results were inconclusive
Shotgun sequencing of a bone, a rib fragment and a tooth found human DNA in just 0–0.9% of the reads. The sequences did not show the post-mortem damage patterns typically expected of ancient DNA. Why this does not trace Jesus’s DNA
A DNA sequence cannot identify an unknown historical person by itself. As Oxford statistical genomics researcher George Busby explains, identification requires a reliable comparison sample. Comparing well-preserved, independently attributed relics might help assess whether they came from the same or related people, but contamination is a major concern. As Busby puts it: “For a start, no DNA test can prove that these were bits of John the Baptist, Jesus or any other specific person.” A usable comparison could potentially provide evidence of a genetic relationship between samples, but it could not establish a religious or historical identity without trustworthy provenance and suitable reference material.

How to read the claims about the find
- Find context and inscription: support the historical association of the relics with Saint John; they do not authenticate the bones.
- Radiocarbon date: estimates the age of one sampled human bone; it does not name the person.
- DNA sequencing: yielded very little human DNA without the damage patterns expected of ancient DNA; the study judged it likely contamination.
- Individual identity: remains unresolved. The analysis did not establish whether the samples came from one person or several.
