Hela has a credible claim to being one of Marvel’s most memorable movie villains. In Thor: Ragnarok, Cate Blanchett gives her commanding presence, a striking visual identity and a conflict rooted in Asgard’s family history. The claim has limits: some critics found Hela underused or thinly characterized. Whether she is Marvel’s “best” depends on what you value in a villain.
What makes Hela more than a formidable enemy?
Marvel’s official film page identifies Hela as the all-powerful threat to Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok. D23’s 2017 feature on the film’s villains adds the conflict behind that threat: Hela returns from exile with weapons and an army, determined to impose a brutal new order. D23 also describes her as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first lead female villain.
Her place in Asgard’s family history gives the conflict more weight than a straightforward contest of strength. Hela is not simply an outsider who appears to threaten the realm; her return forces Thor to confront a buried part of Asgard’s past. That connection lets the film frame her ambition as both a political challenge and a family rupture.
Why Cate Blanchett’s performance strengthens the case
Blanchett plays Hela with authority and theatrical menace, but the character is not meant to be only grim. Director Taika Waititi told D23: “She’s not only strong and all of that and beautiful but she’s also funny. And she’s also flawed. She has layers; she’s tormented. She’s got a lot more going on than some of the more typical villains that you see in these kinds of films. She’s not just about taking over the world or owning the universe; she wants something that I think a lot of people can relate to—recognition.”

Blanchett told D23 that she and Waititi wanted to avoid making Hela predictable: “We agreed that we didn’t want her to be predictable, and we were open to the random sides of her. She’s not simply sinister. She also sometimes doesn’t want to kill people. There’s a bit of mischief in there and playfulness.” Those intentions give Hela flashes of humor and unpredictability alongside her threat.
Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, speaking to Fandango about Blanchett’s work, described the uneasy pull of the performance: “And as intimidating and scary as it is, you have an empathetic feeling toward her a lot of time from what she’s doing. You’re kind of like, ‘Ah, she’s got a point maybe.’ And then you’ve got to remind yourself that she’s trying to kill us all.” That tension—understanding a grievance without endorsing its consequences—helps make Hela more engaging than a villain defined only by menace.

How Hela’s design makes her instantly recognizable
Hela’s black armor and elaborate headgear make her one of Ragnarok’s clearest visual signatures. The design was developed through an extensive process, not just a single costume idea: a November 6, 2017 Vanity Fair production report says concept artists developed hundreds of alternate designs. Visual-effects supervisor Jake Morrison discussed the collaborative work behind her fighting movement, headgear, motion capture and the Asgard invasion sequence.
That production work matters to the case for Hela because her appearance and movement reinforce her authority on screen. Her look is memorable on its own, while the way the film stages her makes her feel like a force capable of overturning Asgard’s established order.

What contemporary critics praised—and questioned
A 2017 Rotten Tomatoes review roundup shows why Hela’s reputation is not an uncontested verdict. Bryan Bishop of The Verge praised her power and “delicious sense of scene-chewing malevolence.” Alonso Duralde of The Wrap highlighted Blanchett’s performance and physical presence.
Other critics wanted more from the character. Kevin Harley of Total Film called her underused, while Eric Kohn of IndieWire argued that Blanchett was given too little substantial material. James Dyer of Empire found Hela striking but one-note. These are individual critics’ contemporary responses, not a measurement of audience opinion. Together, they identify the key weakness in the “best villain” argument: Hela can dominate a scene without receiving enough development or sustained use to match her imposing entrance.

Where does Hela rank among Marvel villains?
There is no objective ranking that settles the question. One useful way to judge Hela is to compare villains on the same criteria: performance and screen presence, visual design, character depth, and how fully the story uses them. Hela makes a strong case on the first two; underuse and limited characterization are the clearest counterarguments.
TIME’s 2019 MCU villain ranking placed Hela fifth. The publication emphasized Blanchett’s black armor and headgear, and argued that Hela did not need to be especially complex to work within Thor’s family drama. That is one publication’s editorial judgment from 2019, not a current universal consensus. It does, however, capture the trade-off: Hela’s presence and role in the family conflict can be more compelling than the depth of her characterization.

So, is Hela Marvel’s best movie villain? If the standard is an unforgettable performance, formidable screen presence and distinctive design tied to a hero’s personal history, the argument is persuasive. If the standard requires extensive character development and a fully sustained arc, the critical reservations make “best” harder to defend. Hela is most convincingly called one of Marvel’s standout movie villains—not an indisputable number one.
