Many reported Bigfoot sightings may be misidentified black bears, including bears briefly standing upright. A geographic analysis found that Sasquatch reports tend to occur where both black bears and people are more numerous. That makes bears a plausible explanation for many reports—not proof about any individual sighting, and not an explanation for every report.
What is the simple explanation for Bigfoot sightings?
Data scientist Floe Foxon compared reported Bigfoot sightings with black bear density and human population patterns across the United States and Canada. ScienceAlert’s 2023 account of the analysis describes a general association between sightings and places with more bears and people, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. The finding is a geographic pattern across areas, not direct identification of the creature in any report. ScienceAlert’s report on Foxon’s analysis explains the result and its caveats.
Foxon’s analysis, as reported by ScienceAlert, estimated an average of one Sasquatch sighting for every 900 black bears in a given U.S. state or Canadian province. That is a modeled relationship between counts across regions; it is not the odds that a particular sighting was a bear, nor a claim that every 900 bears produce one encounter.
Why might a bear be mistaken for Bigfoot?
A bear can briefly stand upright while investigating something it cannot identify. The U.S. Forest Service explains: “A bear may stand on its hind legs to get a better look or to pick up your scent if it cannot tell what you are.” In a brief or obstructed view, an upright bear could be mistaken for a large, humanlike figure. The behavior makes the explanation plausible, but it cannot establish what a witness saw.

The Forest Service’s explanation appears in its bear frequently asked questions. It describes bear behavior generally; it does not evaluate any particular Bigfoot report.
What are the limits of the bear explanation?
The correlation does not show that bears caused the reports. It shows that sightings and bear and human populations overlap geographically more than the analysis would suggest by chance alone. It cannot distinguish a bear misidentification from another animal, a person, a hoax, or a mistaken observation in any single case.

There are also reported sightings in Texas and Florida, where black bears are less common, and in states without known breeding black bear populations. Foxon noted that “sasquatch sightings have been reported in states with no known breeding black bear populations.” Such exceptions weaken any claim that black bears account for all reports; they do not by themselves establish that Bigfoot exists. Other animals, including humans, may also be misidentified. PBS’s discussion of Bigfoot evidence also addresses eyewitness reports and overlap with bear ranges.
Do Bigfoot hair samples provide physical evidence?
A 2014 genetic survey examined 30 hair samples attributed to anomalous primates, including Bigfoot and the Yeti. BBC Science Focus summarizes the result as all but two samples matching known mammalian species. The two Himalayan samples were initially interpreted as potentially unusual bear material, but a later peer-reviewed analysis challenged that interpretation and concluded that Brown Bear was the supported identification. Neither study established Bigfoot’s existence.

The later analysis, “No need to replace an ‘anomalous’ primate with an ‘anomalous’ bear”, specifically disputes the unusual-bear inference for those two samples. BBC Science Focus’s evidence overview summarizes the earlier survey and the broader evidence question.

The sources reviewed here do not establish Bigfoot’s existence. That is not the same as mathematically proving that no unknown animal could exist. The bear hypothesis is strongest as a straightforward explanation for many reports in places where bears and people are common; it remains a population-level explanation, not a verdict on every sighting. For an individual claim, the important distinction is between an eyewitness account or a geographic pattern and a physical specimen that can be independently identified and verified.

Foxon described the alternative interpretation carefully: “Although this may be interpreted as evidence for the existence of an unknown hominid in North America, it is also explained by misidentification of other animals (including humans), among other possibilities.”
