To choose a fall look, decide how light or dark you want it, whether it should lean golden or red, how vivid it should be, and whether you want all-over color or highlights. Bring reference photos to your colorist; the word “copper” can mean different things to different people.
How to choose a copper shade
Think of copper along four axes: depth, warmth, intensity, and placement. A colorist can use those choices alongside your starting hair color and hair condition to plan a result that is achievable and maintainable.
- Depth: Choose from light, blonde-adjacent copper through medium shades to deep brown-red.
- Warmth: Decide whether you prefer golden and orange notes or red, rose, and berry notes.
- Intensity: Ask for a soft, muted result or a more vivid copper.
- Placement: Consider all-over color, highlights, balayage, a darker root, or an ombré effect.
Undertone can be a useful starting point, not a strict rule. Lorena M. Valdes, a colorist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, suggests golden or orange-leaning copper for warm or golden undertones, redder hues for cooler undertones, and more freedom for neutral undertones. Davines offers a slightly different guide, including berry or rose-gold copper for cool undertones and wine or cherry copper for olive undertones. These are stylist suggestions, not guarantees; consider the intensity you want and consult with a colorist.
Your starting color and hair porosity also affect the formula and the result. In the InStyle feature reproduced by Maxine Salon, Valdes says copper-tinged strawberry blonde is easiest to achieve and maintain on blonde, light-brown, or naturally red hair, while deeper dimensional shades can be a better fit for naturally dark hair. Davines likewise notes that starting color, porosity, and developer strength affect the formula.

13 copper hair color ideas to discuss with your colorist
The following ideas describe a range of copper directions rather than a fixed formula. Five named looks below are visible in the InStyle feature reproduced by Maxine Salon; the other descriptions draw on Wella’s broader shade guide and are not presented as additional names from that feature.
1. Pumpkin Spice
A medium, orange-leaning copper with a warm, seasonal feel. The InStyle feature describes this look on Leighton Meester.
2. Rich Russet
Cinnamon-like copper paired with a deep-brown root for contrast. Valdes notes that a shadow root or root tap can extend the time between appointments.
3. Cherry Copper
A burnished red copper with subtle face-framing highlights. It keeps the overall look in the red family while adding brightness around the face.

7. Copper Blonde
A brighter, golden-peach shade. Wella distinguishes copper blonde from strawberry blonde by its more pronounced golden-peach character.

Bring photos that show the color and placement you want, and explain your starting color, preferred depth, and how much upkeep you can manage. Valdes told InStyle, in the feature reproduced by Maxine Salon on September 22, 2025: “I would avoid describing copper as everyone’s interpretation is different. Bringing in a picture of the color you want is perfect.”

Use the consultation to settle details that a photo alone may not reveal:
- Should the copper lean golden-orange, red, or more muted brown?
- Do you want a uniform color, dimension through highlights or balayage, or a darker root?
- What result is realistic for your starting hair color and condition?
- Which formula and placement will fit your preferred salon-visit schedule?
How often copper hair needs refreshing
Refresh timing depends on the placement and formula. Valdes estimates that all-over root-to-tip copper needs a refresh every four to six weeks, while highlights can go eight to twelve weeks between touch-ups. These are her reported intervals, not a schedule that applies to every head of hair.
Davines says permanent copper typically starts fading in four to six weeks, while semi- or demi-permanent formulas can fade in one to three weeks. Those figures are brand guidance; your colorist can advise based on your formula and hair.
How to maintain copper between appointments
Valdes recommends color-safe shampoo and conditioner, heat protectant before styling, and minimizing exposure to salt water and chlorine. Davines also recommends spacing out washes, rinsing with cool water, using color-care products, and considering copper pigment-depositing shampoo or conditioner. These steps can support maintenance, but a depositing product should not be treated as a guarantee against fading.
Davines names its Alchemic Conditioner Copper as an option for refreshing copper tones between salon visits. Ask your colorist whether a depositing product suits your shade and how often to use it.
