What he found “kind of shocking” was the media’s reaction to learning he had not used a prosthetic—and the headlines’ focus on that detail. He also said that attention felt unfortunate given the series’ subject matter of sexual abuse.
What Koch said was shocking
In an interview on The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham on Radio Andy, Koch was asked about the coverage that followed his disclosure. SiriusXM reported his response: “The media’s reaction to this revelation has been ‘kind of shocking,’ he told Jess and Julia.” The surprise he described was about the press response, not about performing the scene.

Koch also said, “I was comfortable doing it.” He thought the headlines’ fixation on whether he used a prosthetic was strange. At the same time, he acknowledged that the show’s sexual-abuse subject matter made the attention around the nudity an unfortunate combination. Those points are part of the same response: he was at ease with the acting, while questioning the way the detail was turned into a headline.

Why the distinction matters
The headline-grabbing detail was Koch’s disclosure about prosthetic use. But his later comments were not a complaint about the scene itself: he said he was comfortable doing it. His criticism concerned the media’s concentration on that detail, especially alongside a drama about sexual abuse. SiriusXM also noted that Koch had appeared in similarly revealing scenes in the 2022 horror film Swallowed.
