Connie: A Memoir revisits Connie Chung’s life in broadcast journalism and the gender and racial barriers she faced as a Chinese American woman in a predominantly white, male newsroom. It also connects her visibility on television to a reported cultural pattern: some Asian American parents named daughters Connie after seeing her on screen. That history is meaningful, but the available accounts do not establish how many women received the name for that reason.
What is Connie: A Memoir about?
Published by Grand Central Publishing on September 17, 2024, Connie: A Memoir is Chung’s account of her life and broadcast journalism career. The publisher frames her story as that of the first Asian woman to break into a television news industry dominated by white men. Grand Central Publishing’s book listing gives the hardcover length as 336 pages and lists hardcover, ebook, unabridged audiobook download, and trade paperback editions. It does not establish current retailer stock or prices.
Chung’s career included reporting on Watergate, overseas conflict, presidents, and elections. For readers interested in journalism documentaries, the memoir’s central subject is not simply a sequence of major assignments: it is what it took for a Chinese American woman to gain ground in a profession where she rarely saw people like herself in positions of authority.
How did Chung describe the barriers she faced?
In an interview with Publishers Weekly, Chung recalled entering the business in the late 1960s and seeing a “sea of white men.” She described moving from newsroom secretary work toward writing and on-air reporting. Reflecting on how she adapted, she said, “I quickly realized I could not survive in the news business if I remained a quiet, polite good girl.”

Chung also discussed adopting a tough manner and making bawdy jokes as coping strategies. She was explicit that this was her own way of trying to survive, not advice for others: “I do not advise it.” Her account makes the distinction important: describing a tactic she used does not mean she considered the workplace fair or believed other women should have to respond the same way.
What milestone did Chung reach in television news?
PBS NewsHour’s introduction to its September 20, 2024 interview calls Chung the first Asian American and second woman to anchor a national evening newscast. The University of Maryland’s profile uses closely related wording, describing her as the first Asian American and second woman to anchor an evening news program. The publisher’s broader description instead calls her the first Asian woman to break into a male-dominated television news industry. These are related but distinct formulations; the anchor milestone is specifically about national evening news.

In the PBS interview, Chung said women still experience sexism and Chinese and other Asian people still experience racism. She described equality as improved in some ways but not yet at parity: “There is a better level of equality, but it hasn’t reached parity.” That is Chung’s assessment in the 2024 interview, not a statistical measurement of conditions today.
Why are some Asian American women named Connie?
Journalist Connie Wang brought Chung stories from Asian American women whose immigrant parents had chosen the Americanized name Connie after seeing Chung on television. The Associated Press described a “Connie generation” spanning roughly the late 1970s through the mid-1990s. Wang told the AP, “There was quite literally no one else like her.”

Chung said she had not known about the pattern before Wang told her. Recalling her reaction, she said, “I was flabbergasted,” and added, “I’m not a crybaby, and I really bawled.” The AP also reported that Wang personally heard from at least 100 women with similar stories after writing about the phenomenon. That is a small set of individual responses, not a census or an estimate of all Asian American women named Connie; the accounts do not show that every family had the same reason.
How did the name stories change Chung’s view of her career?
In the Publishers Weekly interview, Chung said Wang’s story helped her understand and embrace her career as successful. The connection was not only that viewers had watched a prominent journalist. For women whose parents rarely saw Asian American women represented in national television news, Chung’s visibility could make a name—and a public role—feel imaginable. The reported family stories offer a personal account of that effect, rather than proof of a population-wide naming trend.
