What is Concrete Land about?
The film centers on the Najar family, a three-generation Palestinian Bedouin family living with their animals on the outskirts of Amman. As construction changes the area around them, luxury villas approach the space where the family lives and grazes its animals. The pressure is both physical and personal: the family must confront the prospect of leaving land they do not own and consider whether to continue a Bedouin way of life elsewhere or move to the city. The Doha Film Institute’s project description also recounts how a neighbor’s complaint made relocation a concrete possibility.
Accounts of the family’s situation should not be taken as a general account of Bedouin life or of Jordanian housing law. The film tells the story of this particular family and its encounter with changing land use, uncertainty, and displacement.
Who made the film, and how was it filmed?
Jordanian filmmaker Asmahan Bkerat made Concrete Land as her first feature-length documentary, according to the Palestine Film Institute. The Vancouver International Film Festival listing says filming took place over eight years. Eman, who was ten when filming began, is a central figure; viewers see her grow into her teenage years. That passage of time gives the family’s changing circumstances a personal, generational dimension rather than presenting displacement as a single event.

These themes concern how the family is treated and seen, not a claim that one family stands for every Palestinian or Bedouin experience.

Generational differences
The film traces different responses within the family. IDFA’s description says the grandfather wants to stay, while his son recognizes that the land has been sold and eviction may come. Eman’s growth during the long filming period adds another perspective to a family negotiating continuity, change, and an uncertain future. IDFA’s 2026 catalog listing describes the Najars as one of the last Afro-Palestinian Bedouin families still living in tents; that is the festival’s characterization of this family, not a population statistic.
