Sophie Thatcher’s Iris is the story’s central point of view, while Jack Quaid plays Josh, her boyfriend. Drew Hancock’s 2025 science-fiction thriller is built to shift between suspense, horror and dark comedy; whether its gender satire lands depends on how much bluntness a viewer finds cathartic rather than repetitive.
What is Companion about?
Three couples gather at a remote lake house, where a weekend away turns into a story of love, deceit and revenge. At its center are Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and Josh (Jack Quaid). Iris is a humanoid robot designed for companionship, a premise that gives the film a science-fiction frame for a relationship shaped by unequal power.

The setup is best approached with as little advance knowledge as possible. Hancock’s film starts as a relationship thriller and lets the audience learn more as the story unfolds. This review avoids explaining its later turns.
Is Companion a horror movie?
Yes, though it is not horror alone. The film combines science fiction, thriller, bloody violence and dark comedy. Its shifts in tone are part of the appeal: moments of tension and threat sit alongside deliberately sharp, sometimes absurd humor. The British Board of Film Classification lists it as science fiction and thriller, with an approximate runtime of 97 minutes.
#1 Best Overall
The BBFC’s UK home-entertainment notes warn of strong bloody violence, injury detail, sexual threat, strong language and sexist behavior. They describe stabbings, shootings, beatings, improvised weapons, controlling and abusive partner behavior, and a sexual assault that the woman fights off. These are UK content notes, not a universal rating.
What is the film saying about misogyny and control?
The companion-robot idea makes the relationship’s power imbalance difficult to ignore. Iris’s designed role invites questions about who gets to define a partner’s purpose, whose wants take priority, and what agency means when one person holds the advantage. The film connects those questions to misogyny and dominance rather than presenting the technology as a forecast about real-world AI.

Critics have read the film’s targets in related ways, but disagree about its execution. Time Out praised its darkly funny take on gender dynamics and control, while The New York Times described it as a broad satire aimed at male desire for dominance. Peyton Robinson at RogerEbert.com placed the film in conversation with poor socialization, incel culture and institutional misogyny, calling it a “satirical horror-comedy.”
The Guardian reviewer offers the key counterpoint: the gender commentary is “simple, grasping” and becomes repetitive, with Josh’s online sexism too obvious to add much depth. That tension is also the film’s central risk. Its directness can make the threat and the satire easy to read, but viewers looking for a more layered account of misogyny may find the point is stated too often and developed too little.

How well do the performances and genre shifts work?
Thatcher’s Iris gives the premise its human point of contact: the audience experiences the story’s changing balance of power through her. Quaid’s Josh is the other half of that central relationship, and the contrast between their positions drives much of the tension. The supporting cast named in Warner Bros.’ release materials includes Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén and Rupert Friend.
Hancock’s genre mixture keeps the film moving between a science-fiction setup, thriller suspense, horror and dark comedy. That makes it an accessible, brisk watch, but also means the story’s tonal turns may matter more to some viewers than its thematic subtlety. If you want a genre film that makes its argument plainly, Companion has a clear point of view; if you want its social critique to unfold with more nuance, the Guardian’s reservation is worth taking seriously.
Does Companion have a twist?
Spoiler warning: The film has reveals that change how the audience understands its setup and relationships. Describing them here would compromise the experience, so it is better to go in knowing only the broad premise: a remote-house gathering, a companion robot and a relationship thriller that develops into horror and dark comedy.

Who should watch it?
Companion is a good fit for viewers who enjoy sci-fi premises used to drive horror-thriller tension and who are open to dark comedy with a pointed social target. Its strongest discussion is not whether it has a message about gender and power, but whether its deliberately broad approach makes that message forceful or too repetitive. Viewers sensitive to graphic violence, sexual threat or abusive relationship dynamics should also take the BBFC’s content notes into account.
