Commentary: JoJo Siwa Is Trying Too Hard to Shock Us With “Karma”

Brittany Spanos’s critique of JoJo Siwa’s “Karma” rollout turns on a familiar pop-cultural strategy: the former child star’s conspicuous shift toward an adult image.

Brittany Spanos’s central criticism is that JoJo Siwa’s 2024 “Karma” rollout tried to make a dramatic break from her children’s-entertainment image feel shocking, but relied on a pop-star transformation audiences had seen before. That is Spanos’s interpretation—not a measurable consensus about how listeners responded.

What Spanos argues about the “Karma” rollout

In her April 10, 2024, Rolling Stone commentary, published by Yahoo Entertainment, Spanos reads “Karma” as part of an effort to introduce a more adult, provocative version of Siwa. Siwa had been widely associated with bows, glittery pastel styling, and family-oriented entertainment; the rollout’s more explicit presentation was intended to mark distance from that image. Spanos’s point is that the signaling felt familiar rather than genuinely startling. Read Spanos’s commentary.

That distinction matters: “trying too hard” is the article’s critical judgment about the effect of the campaign, not an established fact about Siwa’s intentions or a claim that every viewer reacted the same way. The commentary uses the rollout’s imagery and lyrics to support its reading of the shock strategy.

Why the transformation feels familiar in pop culture

Spanos places Siwa’s image change in a recurring pattern: performers first known as child stars often make adulthood visible through changes in styling, performance, and music. She invokes Michael and Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, and Nick Jonas as examples in that broader history.

The comparison is about a recognizable cultural playbook, not an assertion that these artists had identical careers, circumstances, or artistic aims. Spanos’s argument is that the device of a former child performer making a conspicuous adult turn has become familiar enough that provocation alone may not create the surprise a campaign seeks.

Other explanations for the debate over Siwa’s rebrand

A separate April 28, 2024, article by GNN Web Desk describes discussion of the rebrand through several additional questions: whether the persona felt authentic, what the song’s earlier versions and authorship meant to the conversation, and how expectations around queer women and former child stars may have shaped reception. These are reported strands of debate, not settled explanations for why people responded as they did. Read the GNN Web Desk article.

JoJo Siwa 10 Inch Singing Doll, Sings Hit Song Titled "Non-Stop", Pink Jacket with Rainbow Fringe, Kids Toys for Ages 6Up by Just Play
  • The Singing JoJo Doll stands 10 inches tall.
  • JoJo sings her hit song, "Nonstop."
  • Wears outfit inspired by JoJo’s look in the music video.
  • Includes a silver microphone accessory.
  • Includes hairbrush to help style and comb JoJo's hair.

The article quotes Djoymi Baker, a media and cinema studies lecturer at RMIT University, on the cultural expectations attached to childhood celebrity: “Child stars and celebrities embody not only our culture’s ideals of childhood, but also demonstrate how contradictory those ideals actually are.” Baker also says, “The child star brand of innocence has historically been quite specific.” The accompanying discussion concerns how expectations can be shaped by race, ability, gender, sexuality, and growing up. That perspective adds context to the rebrand debate without proving that any single factor explains the response to “Karma.”

What the commentary establishes—and what it does not

Spanos’s piece is cultural criticism: it makes a case about the familiarity and effectiveness of a pop-image strategy. The separate article broadens the discussion to authenticity, song history, and audience expectations. Neither source supplies a statistic or study that quantifies public reaction, and the reported perspectives should not be converted into a claim about what all viewers thought.

Spanos also cites a 2019 interview in which Siwa said, “I literally sleep with a piano on my bed,” using the remark to illustrate her stated musical ambition. It is a reported quotation, not independent evidence about the meaning or success of the later rollout.
