The viral Coldplay audience-camera moment did not prove that two executives were having an affair. It showed Andy Byron, then CEO of data-operations company Astronomer, and Kristin Cabot, then the company’s chief people officer, embracing at a July 16, 2025, concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. When they appeared on the venue’s large screen, Cabot turned away and Byron ducked out of view. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin then joked: Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.
That remark, the couple’s reaction and their workplace positions turned a few seconds of concert footage into an international news story. But the distinction between what the video showed and what viewers inferred is essential: the footage established an intimate-looking public moment and an apparent attempt to avoid the camera. It did not independently establish a romantic relationship or an affair.
What happened at the Coldplay concert?
Coldplay performed at Gillette Stadium on July 16, 2025. During the band’s audience-camera feature, Byron and Cabot appeared together on the venue’s video board while embracing. As they realized they were being shown to the crowd, Cabot turned away and Byron lowered himself out of the frame.

Martin improvised around the image and said the pair were either having an affair
or just very shy.
Many reports called the feature a kiss cam, but Coldplay has also described the segment as its Jumbotron Song
—an audience interaction in which Martin sings or improvises around people shown on the screen. Calling it a jumbotron audience segment is more precise than assuming it followed the exact format of a conventional sports kiss cam.
Why did the clip become a scandal?
The people on screen were identified in reporting as Byron and Cabot, two senior Astronomer executives. The fact that Byron was the company’s CEO and Cabot was its chief people officer made the moment more consequential than an ordinary audience reaction. Online viewers quickly interpreted their effort to avoid the camera as evidence that they were concealing an affair.
The clip spread rapidly across social platforms. ABC reported more than 55 million TikTok views during its July 2025 coverage, while later reports described much broader circulation. Those figures are snapshots from particular platforms and dates, not a definitive lifetime view count. The story moved from concert entertainment to workplace conduct, executive accountability, privacy and reputational damage.
Did Chris Martin catch them cheating?
No. Martin made a joke based on the image and the pair’s reaction; he did not establish that they were cheating. The video showed an embrace and an attempt to avoid the camera. It did not prove:

- that Byron and Cabot were having a romantic relationship;
- that either person was cheating on a spouse;
- how long any relationship may have existed; or
- what the pair’s private or marital circumstances were at the time.
Early coverage appropriately used qualified descriptions such as “alleged affair” and “apparent affair.” Those qualifications matter. A viral interpretation can become the dominant version of an event without becoming a verified fact.
What did later reporting say about Byron and Cabot?
Later reporting complicated the original online assumption. A source cited by People said Byron and Cabot had a close professional relationship and friendship but were not romantically involved. The source characterized the public embrace as inappropriate while denying that it represented an affair. That was attributed source reporting—not an independently published investigation that conclusively determined the couple’s romantic status.
In a detailed interview published by The New York Times on December 18, 2025, Cabot said she was embarrassed and horrified by the incident and described the conduct as inappropriate. Reporting on that interview also said she and her husband were already separated around the time of the concert. Cabot’s account should be kept distinct from the original viral assumption and from statements attributed to unnamed sources.
No newer primary finding identified in this research established that Byron and Cabot were having an affair. That is why the most accurate summary remains: the clip fueled the allegation, but the clip itself did not prove it.

Astronomer’s response and the executive fallout
Astronomer said it opened a formal investigation after the video circulated. The company emphasized that its leaders were expected to meet standards of conduct and accountability. Byron was placed on leave and resigned as CEO on July 19, 2025.
The board said it would search for a replacement, with co-founder and chief product officer Pete DeJoy serving as interim CEO in the immediate aftermath. Cabot subsequently left Astronomer, according to contemporaneous reporting.
The company’s statements and the resignations establish the employment consequences. They do not, by themselves, establish the exact nature of Byron and Cabot’s relationship. Claims about internal investigative findings, severance arrangements or private messages should not be treated as facts unless supported by a public primary document.

Why this became a workplace story, not just a concert mishap
The viral clip would have been embarrassing for almost anyone shown unexpectedly on a giant screen. The corporate consequences arose from the power relationship involved: Byron was Astronomer’s CEO, while Cabot was the company’s senior human-resources executive. That placed the incident in the context of leadership standards, conflicts of interest, perceived favoritism and the responsibility of executives to model workplace conduct.

It is still important not to overstate what is known. A CEO’s resignation after an investigation does not automatically confirm every online allegation about the person. Nor does a company’s concern about leadership conduct prove a particular private relationship. The verified corporate story is that Astronomer investigated, Byron resigned and Cabot later left the company.
Coldplay’s response after the viral moment
At a subsequent Coldplay show, Martin reportedly gave concertgoers a playful warning before the audience-camera segment. The warning was presented as a precaution after the viral incident. It was not reported as a formal admission that the original segment had violated a stated rule.
The episode also illustrated the risks of public audience-camera features. People may consent to attend a concert without expecting a close-up of an emotionally charged moment to be broadcast to a stadium and then copied millions of times online. Once recorded and reposted, a brief interaction can become searchable, permanent and detached from its original context.
What the viral video can—and cannot—tell us
| Supported by the footage or company statements | Not proved by the footage alone |
|---|---|
| Byron and Cabot appeared together on the screen. | That they were romantically involved. |
| They embraced and then tried to avoid the camera. | That either person was cheating. |
| Martin made the “affair or very shy” joke. | That Martin knew their private circumstances. |
| Astronomer investigated and Byron resigned. | The precise findings of the investigation or any private employment terms. |
Bottom line
The Coldplay “kiss cam” story was built from a real concert moment, a memorable joke and a large amount of online inference. Chris Martin did not literally catch a couple cheating, and the video did not prove an affair. It showed two high-ranking coworkers in an intimate-looking embrace who appeared eager to leave the frame. The verified aftermath was substantial: Astronomer investigated, Byron resigned on July 19, 2025, and Cabot later left the company. The romantic allegation itself remains an allegation, not a fact established by the clip.
