When does Coco 2 come out?
Disney Movies lists Coco 2 for November 21, 2029, and says it will debut exclusively in theaters. Pixar and Disney’s D23 coverage give the release window as November 2029. That is the currently listed schedule, not a guarantee that the date cannot change. Disney Movies | Pixar | D23
What has Disney confirmed about the story?
At D23 in 2026, Disney showed concept art depicting Miguel as a teenager. The company also said the villain from the first film will reemerge, sending Miguel on a life-changing return trip to the Land of the Dead. Benjamin Bratt, who voiced that villain in the original, appeared at the presentation, and Disney confirmed he is returning. D23
Those details establish the sequel’s starting points, not its full plot. Disney has not published a complete synopsis in the official sources cited here. No additional returning characters or trailer date have been confirmed in those announcements.

Who is making the sequel?
Pixar credits Lee Unkrich as director, Adrian Molina as co-director, and Mark Nielsen as producer. Disney announced the project on March 20, 2025, describing it then as being in its initial stages. At D23 in 2026, Disney said the film was well underway—a later status update, rather than a contradiction of the original announcement. Disney’s 2025 announcement | Pixar | D23
In the 2025 announcement, then-Disney CEO Bob Iger said, “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure.” That was his description at the time; Disney’s 2026 update is the more recent public account of the project’s progress. How does Coco 2 connect to the first film?
The original Coco (2017) follows 12-year-old Miguel, who dreams of becoming a musician despite his family’s generations-old ban on music. His journey into the Land of the Dead leads him to uncover his family history. Disney says the film won two Academy Awards: animated feature and original song for “Remember Me.” The Walt Disney Company
Pixar’s account of the first film’s creation describes a research process rooted in visits to communities and cultural sites across Mexico. Director Lee Unkrich says the filmmakers spent three years visiting museums, markets, plazas, workshops, churches, haciendas, and cemeteries, while families shared food, music, work, and traditions with them. That background explains the original film’s creative context; it does not establish what research or story approach the sequel will take. Pixar
