The ad behind the “downright scary” headline is BODYARMOR’s “Field of Fake,” a 30-second spot for Super Bowl LVIII—not an ad for Coca-Cola’s flagship cola. BODYARMOR is a Coca-Cola sports-drink brand. Its awkward, AI-made sports scenes are deliberate satire: the commercial opens with artificial-looking action, then contrasts it with real athletes and BODYARMOR’s message that sports have no substitute for what is real.
Why this is called a Coke ad—and what the spot actually promotes
BODYARMOR’s parent-company connection explains the shorthand: ABC News/Good Morning America described BODYARMOR as a Coca-Cola sports-drink brand. But the advertiser and product in “Field of Fake” are BODYARMOR, not Coca-Cola’s flagship cola. The distinction matters because the commercial’s closing idea is tied to BODYARMOR’s own positioning around real hydration, flavors, and ingredients.
What happens in “Field of Fake”
The spot begins with generated sports imagery and a synthetic voice delivering nonsensical sports and marketing language. The action is implausible and some of the visuals look awkward; that artificiality sets up the joke rather than concealing the use of AI.
It then shifts to recognizable athletes and BODYARMOR’s claim that real sports—and real—cannot be substituted. ABC News/Good Morning America names Christian McCaffrey, CeeDee Lamb, Joe Burrow, Alex Morgan, and Ronald Acuña among the athletes shown. In the ad’s structure, the contrast does the work: the strange opening makes the later presentation of real athletes and the product message legible as the answer to the “fake” field.

Why make the AI imagery look wrong?
“Field of Fake” turns generative-media shortcomings into its central comic device. Ars Technica described the commercial as making fun of generative AI’s deficiencies, rather than presenting AI as a capable sports-ad tool. The odd scenes are therefore part of the argument: a synthetic imitation of sport looks absurd beside the recognizable people and athletic context that BODYARMOR wants to associate with its brand.
That is a reading of the creative choice, not proof that the brand’s product claims are objectively superior. The campaign is advertising, and its statements about “real” hydration, flavors, and ingredients should be understood as BODYARMOR’s positioning.

How the commercial was made
Creative contributor Ellie Fusco says the team generated images, used Runway to add motion, and combined the material with visual-effects and editing programs. Her project page credits copywriters Al Duggan and Lawrence O’Toole and production studio Buoy. This account describes a mixed production process; it does not establish that the ad was generated autonomously or that every part was made with AI.
What BODYARMOR said the campaign meant
Kristen Rumble, BODYARMOR’s vice president of brand strategy and creative, said the team “quickly came to the collective realization that there is no substitute for real – especially in sports.” CMO Tom Gargiulo put the brand’s message this way: “We’re proud to show that in a field of fake, nothing is more real than BODYARMOR.” These are campaign statements, not independent comparisons with competing drinks.

When and where the ad ran
ABC News/Good Morning America reported a 30-second runtime. The spot was scheduled for the February 11, 2024 Super Bowl LVIII broadcast. MediaPost reported a U.S. footprint in more than 20 key cities, with a separate national placement in Canada, dedicated Spanish-language programming on Univision, and planned digital, social, and programmatic placements. That account does not establish a national U.S. television broadcast or a particular audience size.
It was BODYARMOR’s first Super Bowl television spot. The campaign’s distribution and planned placements describe where the brand intended to run the work, not how many people watched it or what effect it had on sales.

Is “downright scary” a fair description?
The imagery may strike an individual viewer as unsettling, but “scary” is an opinion, not an established consensus about this particular BODYARMOR commercial. The available reporting supports reading the spot as satire of generative AI’s visual errors. It does not provide an audience survey or an independently established performance figure for “Field of Fake.” Nor should reactions to Coca-Cola’s separate 2024 holiday ad be treated as evidence of how viewers responded to this BODYARMOR spot.
