The announcement was not a new 2026 layoff round: the available reporting through October 8, 2026, does not verify further CNN cuts. CNN’s later performance figures and a change in ownership add context, but do not establish another restructuring.
What CNN announced in January 2025
CNN said it would eliminate about 200 jobs while changing its weekday programming and expanding digital offerings. The network also said it expected new openings and did not expect its overall headcount to fall much by the end of 2025. The Associated Press reported that the cuts were concentrated in CNN’s television business and would eventually be offset by digital hiring.
CNN described the shift as a response to audiences moving toward other platforms and products. CEO Mark Thompson said the goal was “to shift CNN’s gravity towards the platforms and products where the audience themselves are shifting” and to secure the network’s future. In an interview with the AP, he said the changes were “not a cost-saving exercise” and that CNN was leaning in with increased investment.
What “beyond cable TV” meant
The plan covered several kinds of digital distribution and products, rather than a simple replacement of CNN’s cable channel. CNN announced a $70 million investment from parent Warner Bros. Discovery in its digital plans, which included a redesigned digital footprint, subscriber products and a planned streaming product. CNN already had CNN Max, but Thompson said that service was not a complete answer to CNN’s future.

The AP described the proposed video product as a TV-like stream available on devices, but not a simulcast of the linear channel. Its January 2025 report gave no launch date. The AP also reported that CNN had introduced a subscription priced at $3.99 monthly or $29.99 yearly for heavy users, and was developing online products in areas including lifestyle, weather and sports. Those were plans and pricing reported at the time; they do not establish current availability or prices.
What CNN reported about its audience in 2026
In a September 30, 2026 company release, CNN said it ended the third quarter with growth across television, digital and streaming. The following figures are CNN-reported, not an independent assessment; the company identified Nielsen, Adobe Analytics, Megaphone and Rival IQ as sources for the respective television, digital, podcast and social data.

- Television: CNN reported that its Monday–Sunday Q3 primetime average among adults 25–54 rose 15% year over year, from 92,000 to 106,000. It reported that the corresponding total audience grew 12%, from 562,000 to 632,000.
- Live video: CNN reported Q3 live-video viewership up 25% and live-video starts up 59% year over year.
- Social reach: CNN said it had 19.9 million YouTube subscribers and more than 16 million TikTok followers in September 2026.
These reported gains show activity across multiple distribution channels, but do not by themselves establish the financial performance of the digital strategy or explain the staffing decisions.
How the ownership change fits—and what it does not show
The AP reported that Skydance-owned Paramount completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026. The AP said Mark Thompson would remain CNN’s editor-in-chief, while the future shape of the combined company’s news operations remained unknown. The acquisition is relevant ownership context; it is not evidence of a new CNN layoff announcement.

Is CNN announcing another round of layoffs?
The documented cuts in these reports are the January 23, 2025 restructuring. CNN’s September 2026 performance release and the AP’s October 2026 ownership report do not verify a later round of layoffs. The headline phrase “more layoffs” should therefore not be read as confirmation of newly announced 2026 cuts.
