The remark appeared to invoke the September pager and walkie-talkie explosions in Lebanon and Syria. Girdusky apologized on air, and host Abby Phillip apologized to Hasan and viewers.
What Ryan Girdusky said on CNN
The exchange took place on CNN’s NewsNight on October 28, 2024, during a discussion of Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally. According to the Associated Press and The Washington Post, the conversation turned to Hasan’s support for Palestinians and the accusations of antisemitism he said he was accustomed to hearing.
Girdusky then told Hasan, “I hope your beeper doesn’t go off.” Hasan replied, “Did you just say I should die?” The Washington Post reported that Girdusky said he had thought Hasan said he supported Hamas rather than Palestine, and apologized for misunderstanding him.
Why the beeper remark drew condemnation
The comment was understood as a reference to September 2024 explosions involving pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah members in Lebanon and Syria. That reference gave the phrase a threatening meaning in the context of a discussion with Hasan, a Muslim journalist who had expressed support for Palestinians.

News accounts used different descriptions of the remark, including racist, derogatory, offensive and bigoted. CNN’s own statement called for “zero room for racism or bigotry at CNN or on our air.” Those are characterizations of the remark; they are not a legal finding.
Accounts also report different casualty figures for the September attacks, reflecting different scopes and formulations. The Associated Press reported 39 deaths across the pager and walkie-talkie explosions. The Washington Post described the pager operation as having killed or maimed more than 3,000 people. These figures should not be treated as interchangeable totals.

How the panel responded
Hasan challenged the remark immediately with his question about whether Girdusky had said he should die. Girdusky said on air that he had misheard Hasan and apologized. After a commercial break, Phillip apologized to Hasan and viewers, saying, “I want to apologise to Mehdi Hasan for what was said at this table. It was completely unacceptable.”
Girdusky later characterized the remark as a joke in a post on X and criticized CNN’s decision. The Washington Post also reported that in a later Substack essay he said he had misheard Hasan. These were separate later accounts, following his on-air apology.
