Cloud live streaming services handle some or all of the technical work between a live video feed and its viewers—but they do not all do the same job. Some provide managed video infrastructure for an app or website; others package a branded subscription destination. To choose well, start with the experience you need, estimate the audience and storage workload, then compare providers’ billing units rather than headline rates.
What a cloud live streaming service does
A cloud service can receive a produced stream and handle tasks such as video processing, transcoding, delivery, playback, storage, and interactive features. The service usually does not create the live program: you still need a camera or other source, an encoder or production setup, and a connection that sends the stream to the provider.
For example, Amazon Web Services says streamers handle production and send the stream to Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS), which manages video processing, delivery, and playback. A smartphone can be a starting capture device; a multi-camera studio is another option. A webcam is optional equipment, not a cloud-service requirement. See AWS’s IVS overview.
Infrastructure versus a finished publishing platform
Developer-oriented services expose video capabilities that a team integrates into its own app or site. A branded OTT platform is closer to a finished publishing and monetization layer, with a destination and subscriber-facing features. These approaches solve different problems and should not be treated as interchangeable.
#1 Best Overall
- STUNNING HD VIDEO QUALITY — Live stream and record in stunning 1080p HD resolution with crisp, detailed imaging, right out of the box.
- STREAM ANYWHERE — Go where the story takes you. Stream live from anywhere in the world using Wi-Fi, Ethernet or even your smartphone’s LTE network.
- INTELLIGENT APP CONTROL — Wirelessly control your Mevo and create compelling content with features like Auto-Director, all from your smartphone.
- MULTICAM MADE EASY — Connect up the three Mevo Start cameras to easily create broadcast-quality streams with multiple angles.
- ADVANCED ONBOARD AUDIO — Capture clean, clear audio using the built-in microphone or connect external audio sources for advanced setups.
Benefits—and the trade-offs to plan for
- Less infrastructure to operate: managed services can take on processing and delivery work that would otherwise require a self-managed video pipeline.
- Features beyond playback: depending on the provider, APIs, SDKs, chat, timed metadata, participant stages, captions, or moderation workflows may be available.
- Audience reach without a single self-hosted delivery point: providers can offer managed delivery, but the resulting bill depends on viewer hours or minutes, resolution, geography, and provider pricing rules.
- Less control over the final bill: usage-based charges can grow with viewing, storage, or interaction. A large audience at a high bitrate may cost more to deliver than the live encoder costs to run.
- Integration and operational work remain: an API-based service still needs a player, product integration, access controls, and a tested workflow. A published latency figure does not guarantee the same end-to-end result in every implementation.
How major cloud streaming options differ
The following comparison describes the published service shapes and pricing meters available in the provider sources. It is not a claim that one option is universally cheaper or performs best for every deployment.
| Service | Best-fit shape | What the provider describes | Questions to settle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon IVS | An app or site needing managed low-latency or real-time video and interaction | Managed live streaming with low-latency and real-time modes, SDKs, chat, timed metadata, and participant stages. Input, viewer output, participant hours, and chat messages have separate meters. AWS pricing | What end-to-end latency is required? Which channel type, audience regions, resolutions, recording, and chat features are needed? |
| Cloudflare Stream | A team seeking an API for video broadcast, storage, and delivery | Live and on-demand use stored and delivered minutes; the documented model includes ingress, encoding, and bandwidth. Cloudflare pricing | How many minutes will be stored and delivered? What retention is needed? Are current terms suitable if live WebRTC is required? |
| Mux | A developer team comparing video workflows with a usage estimator | The pricing page offers live/on-demand selection and estimate inputs for resolution, quality, input, storage, delivery, and optional features such as captions and content moderation. Mux video pricing | Which quality tier and processing features are necessary, and what input, storage, and delivery volumes should the estimate use? |
| Vimeo OTT | A publisher building a branded paid or ad-supported video destination | Starter lists prerecorded video and subscription or transaction monetization. Enterprise lists live events, a 24/7 live linear channel, apps, and additional monetization options. Vimeo OTT plans | Do you need a hosted OTT destination or developer components? Check platform fees, upload and transaction charges, device coverage, and support. |
How cloud streaming services charge
Model a real workload before comparing rates
Write down the expected live input hours per month, event duration, concurrent and total viewers, average delivered resolution or bitrate, viewer geography, recording needs and retention period. Add any requirements for chat, real-time participation, captions, or simulcasting. Map each item to the provider’s billing units, and include separate app, platform, support, storage, or transaction charges where published.

Examples of published rates and estimates
- Amazon IVS input rates: AWS’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists $2.00 per input hour for Standard IVS, $0.50 per hour with Multitrack Video, $0.85 for Advanced HD, $0.50 for Advanced SD, and $0.20 for Basic. These are input charges only; viewer output is charged separately and varies by region, resolution, and usage tier. Check the current IVS pricing page before budgeting.
- Cloudflare Stream delivery: Cloudflare’s 2026 pricing documentation lists $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered. Storage is prepaid in $5 monthly increments for each 1,000 minutes of capacity. The documented model bills live and on-demand video the same way, includes ingress and encoding, and adds no separate egress fee. Confirm current Cloudflare terms.
- AWS architecture illustration: AWS’s current guide gives a total of $69.74 for a one-hour, approximately 1,000-viewer, 540p event in a US East (N. Virginia) reference architecture: $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for distribution. The example assumes a 99% CDN cache-hit ratio and highest-bitrate viewer consumption; AWS says its estimates use assumptions and are likely higher than actual costs. It is an architecture illustration using MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront—not an Amazon IVS price quote. AWS live streaming cost example.
AWS’s current IVS pricing page also lists a new-customer free usage tier for certain input, output, participant, composition, and chat quantities. AWS describes up to $200 in new-customer Free Tier credits beginning July 15, 2025. These offers depend on eligibility and terms; verify them with AWS before relying on them in a forecast. IVS pricing and free-tier details.
Do not label a provider “cheapest” without matching the workload, billing region, video quality, storage, and included features. In particular, do not compare an AWS reference-architecture total directly with an IVS input rate: they describe different architectures and cost components.

How to choose the right service
- Set the interaction target. Decide whether seconds of delay are acceptable or whether hosts and viewers must interact almost immediately. AWS lists 3–5 seconds for IVS low-latency streaming and under 300 milliseconds for real-time streaming from host to viewer. These are product figures, not a guarantee of end-to-end delay in your setup; test with the intended player, network, and implementation. Polls, audience participation, auctions, and synchronized commerce may require a real-time design. Amazon IVS product details
- Choose infrastructure or a publishing business layer. For a custom app, examine APIs, SDKs, ingest protocols, player options, recording, analytics, moderation, and the integration work your team must own. For a branded OTT service, examine app distribution, monetization, subscriber management, and platform fees. Mux and Vimeo OTT illustrate those different shapes.
- Estimate delivery, not just production. Model viewer numbers, viewing duration, resolution or bitrate, and geography. AWS’s reference estimate assumes highest-bitrate viewing; AWS notes that variable bitrate and content complexity can reduce the estimate. AWS cost assumptions
- Check ingest compatibility. AWS documentation lists RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT ingest options for IVS and recommends direct streaming for low latency. Encoder settings and player choice also affect the result. Confirm that the provider’s supported inputs fit your production equipment and workflow. AWS IVS streaming configuration
- Account for recordings and retention. Recordings can add storage costs, and keeping a growing archive changes the monthly workload. Check recording availability, deletion behavior, storage metering, and retention limits before estimating totals.
- Test the complete path. Validate latency, playback, captions, access controls, expected concurrency, and operational recovery with your intended encoder and player. Provider specifications cannot substitute for testing the deployment.

Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. After that, choose a day, week, month, six months, or year; cancel any time. India-based customers can use UPI or cards, and card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live production service.
