After an Arizona judge ruled for Clayton Echard in his paternity case on June 18, 2024, Echard described the experience as emotionally exhausting, thanked those who supported him and said he wanted time to process what had happened. The later legal history includes a separate appeal: the Arizona Court of Appeals affirmed the trial court’s award of attorney fees and costs.
What did Clayton Echard say after the ruling?
In contemporaneous coverage of his June 18 statement, Us Weekly quoted Echard as saying: “While this has been very emotionally exhausting, I want to thank the Woodnick law team, my friends and family and a community that sought the truth out from the very beginning.” Us Weekly, via Yahoo
PEOPLE reported that Echard said “accountability needed to be had” and that he wanted time to process the events. The report also quoted his attorney, Gregg Woodnick, calling the process exhausting and welcoming Judge Mata’s ruling. What did the judge decide?
Laura Owens filed a paternity action against Echard in Maricopa County in 2023. Following an evidentiary hearing in June 2024, the trial court ruled for Echard on June 18. The case-history index reports that the court could not find that Owens had been pregnant with Echard’s child and could not establish paternity of a pregnancy that was not confirmed. The distinction matters: the ruling concerned whether the evidence established a pregnancy from which paternity could be determined. Allegations made during the case are not, by themselves, judicial findings.
What happened on appeal?

What does the county attorney referral mean?
The case-history index says the trial court referred the matter to the Maricopa County Attorney for review. A referral asks prosecutors to review information; it is not a criminal conviction or, on its own, proof that a crime occurred.
