The Associated Press and ANSA reported that she died in Nemours, France, in the Paris region; the AP said she was surrounded by her children.
Who was Claudia Cardinale?
Born in Tunis on 15 April 1938 to parents of Sicilian origin, Cardinale became one of Italian cinema’s most recognizable actors. The Associated Press obituary counts more than 100 films and made-for-television productions across her career, a broad total that combines both forms rather than giving a film-only count.
Her path to the screen began unexpectedly. She had hoped to become a schoolteacher, but a beauty contest in Tunisia brought her to the Venice Film Festival and drew the attention of Italy’s film industry. The AP reports that she began her movie career at 17. Looking back while accepting a lifetime achievement award in Berlin in 2002, Cardinale called it an accident: “The fact I’m making movies is just an accident.”
Which films best show her range?
8½ (1963)
In Federico Fellini’s film, Cardinale’s character is associated with youthful purity. The role places her within one of the defining works of 1960s Italian cinema and shows her in a film very different in tone from the historical drama she made that same year.
#1 Best Overall
The Leopard (1963)
In Luchino Visconti’s historical drama, she played Angelica Sedara. The film is a central example of her Italian-cinema career and her collaboration with a major European director.
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
As Jill in Sergio Leone’s western, Cardinale reached audiences beyond Italian drama. Its international scale and genre distinguish it from her early-1960s work.
The Professionals (1966)
Cardinale identified this Richard Brooks western as her best Hollywood film. Her Hollywood credits also included Blindfold (1965) and Don’t Make Waves (1967). Other notable Italian titles cited by ANSA include Big Deal on Madonna Street, Il bell’Antonio and La ragazza con la valigia.
How did she shape her career?
Cardinale’s early career was closely connected to producer Franco Cristaldi, who produced Big Deal on Madonna Street and managed her early work. The AP reports that they were married from 1966 to 1975. The Guardian’s account discusses restrictions on her appearance, relationships and interviews, drawing on Cardinale’s recollections; those details help explain the pressures surrounding her public image without reducing her career to it.
Rank #3
When a studio sought an exclusivity contract, Cardinale refused. As the AP reported her position, she wanted to work as a European actor making films in the United States without surrendering her choices to one studio. That was a decision about how to work, not evidence that Hollywood had rejected her.
Cardinale also spoke about acting as a way to inhabit different lives: “It’s marvelous to live so many lives.” The line captures a sense of craft and possibility that sits alongside the image-making and career management imposed on many stars of her era.

ANSA reported that Cardinale won three David di Donatello awards and three Nastro d’Argento awards. She received the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in 1993 and a career David in 1997. In 2000, UNESCO named her a goodwill ambassador for the defense of women’s rights, according to the AP.
Her death prompted tributes across Europe. Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli called her “one of the greatest Italian actresses of all time,” in a statement reported by the AP. French President Emmanuel Macron said, “We French will always carry this Italian and global star in our hearts, in the eternity of cinema.”
