A strong Class 10 English character sketch makes a clear claim about a character, supports it with specific evidence from the assigned story, and explains what that evidence reveals. For CBSE Class X English Language and Literature, the verified 2025–26 prescribed books are First Flight and Footprints Without Feet; check the 2026–27 syllabus and your school’s edition before deciding which chapters or exam requirements apply.
What makes a character sketch effective?
Think of a character sketch as a short argument, not a list of adjectives. Identify the character and the story, make a few defensible claims about personality or development, then support each claim with an action, choice, response, or line from the text. Explain how that evidence supports your interpretation.
The Directorate of Education, Delhi’s 2025 literature guidance puts the standard plainly: “A clear justification with arguments and evidence for the characters.” That means a trait such as “brave” or “kind” needs a textual reason; the adjective alone does not establish the point.
How to write a character sketch step by step
- Name the character and context. State who the character is and identify the story. Give only the background a reader needs to understand your points.
- Choose two or three meaningful traits. Prefer qualities you can demonstrate from the text over a long string of generic descriptions.
- Find evidence in your assigned edition. Select a particular action, decision, dialogue, or response that illustrates each trait. Keep the text open while you work so your examples are accurate.
- Explain the evidence. Say what the character’s action or words reveal and why they support your claim. Do not assume the example speaks for itself.
- Show change or contrast when the story supports it. Compare an early moment with a later one to explain development, or point out a meaningful contrast between what the character says and does.
- Finish with the character’s contribution. In a concise final sentence, connect the character to the story’s outcome or theme rather than repeating the trait list.

How to compare two characters
Use the same comparison points for both characters so the answer stays focused. For example, compare their motives, choices under pressure, treatment of others, responses to change, and roles in the story’s outcome. Support each comparison with evidence from the relevant text and explain the contrast; do not turn the answer into two unrelated sketches.

The available official material does not establish a current 2026–27 word limit or marks allocation for a character sketch. A CBSE 2013–14 scheme included a roughly 100-word sketch in a long-reading-text section, but that was a historical format from a different syllabus arrangement and should not be treated as a current requirement. CBSE’s 2026–27 sample-paper and marking-scheme index lists English Language and Literature, but the listed index alone does not establish whether a character-sketch prompt or response length appears. Follow the instructions for your current assignment or paper.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Listing traits without proof: attach a specific textual moment to each important claim.
- Retelling the whole plot: include only events that help explain the character.
- Dropping in an example without interpretation: explain what the action or words show.
- Calling a character unchanging when the story shows development: check whether later choices differ from earlier ones.
- Relying on an old word count or chapter list: verify the relevant syllabus year and follow your school’s current directions.
