Claire van der Boom said returning to Western Australia helped her feel restored. In a July 2023 interview, the actor recalled growing up in Broome, visiting family there that May and missing the beaches, old friends and trips to Rottnest. The interview appeared ahead of the planned premiere of her film The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race.
What Claire van der Boom said she misses about Western Australia
Van der Boom told PerthNow that she grew up in Broome and visited family there in May 2023. She described going home as a way to recharge: “I grew up in Broome and I was there (in May) visiting family, it always recharges my batteries, I feel it’s really important to go home at least once a year,”
She also named the places and people she missed: “I miss the beaches, the old friends, heading to Rottnest — which is the equivalent of going to some beautiful Italian coastal island, it’s world-class in its beauty.” She summed up the effect of returning simply: “I feel rejuvenated when I go home.”
The profile said she had lived in the United States for 13 years and moved to Sydney at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Those are details reported in 2023, not a statement of her present residence.

Her role in The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race
Van der Boom plays Penny, who returns to her childhood town for the Appleton Show. In the film’s premise, she discovers that the men’s potato-race winner is offered $2,000 while the women’s winner is offered $200. Those figures describe the story’s conflict as reported by PerthNow; they should not be read as general figures for real potato races.
Van der Boom described Penny as a lively character who pushes back against obstacles. “I thought the script was very succinct, funny and moving … Penny is a vivacious character, she puts up a good fight which is always fun to play and she comes up against a lot of brick walls, so how she copes with that is both heartwarming and amusing,”

Who wrote the film and who is in the cast?
Playwright Melanie Tait wrote the screenplay. PerthNow connected its premise to Tait’s return to Robertson, New South Wales, in 2018, when she learned about a prize discrepancy in the town’s own race. The film turns that starting point into Penny’s story at the fictional Appleton Show.
