Hugo Wentzel is the grandson of former U.S. president Jimmy Carter. The family connection was revealed on Claim to Fame in season 2, episode 7, after Hugo was eliminated from the ABC reality competition in August 2023.
Who is Hugo from Claim to Fame?
Hugo James Wentzel is the son of Amy Carter and James Wentzel. ABC News reports he was born on July 29, 1999. Amy is Jimmy Carter’s daughter, so Jimmy was Hugo’s maternal grandfather. ABC News’ account of the Carter family identifies Hugo among Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s grandchildren.
When was Hugo’s family connection revealed?
The reveal took place at the end of season 2, episode 7, which aired August 7, 2023. In its recap, TV Insider reported that Hugo was eliminated after incorrectly guessing the identity of contestant Chris’s celebrity relative. As part of the elimination sequence, Hugo had to reveal his own famous relative.
WSB-TV’s report published August 8, 2023, described the reveal as occurring in the episode that aired the previous Monday. ABC describes Claim to Fame as a competition in which celebrity relatives live together while trying to identify one another’s famous family members; its official series page provides the show’s premise.

What did Hugo say about his grandfather?
ABC News quoted Hugo describing Jimmy Carter as “an amazing grandpa” and saying, “I call him Papa.” He also praised Carter’s leadership in his family and public life, saying he aspired to be like him. These remarks are attributed to Hugo by ABC News, not presented as dialogue from an official episode transcript.
