Civil War is Alex Garland’s 2024 film about journalists traveling through a near-future United States torn by conflict. Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer reflects the share of professional critic reviews rated positive, but the film page’s retrieved content does not establish a current score. The claim that the film extends a “22-year hot streak” is also unverified: the available evidence does not establish which Garland films count or confirm scores across that span.
What is Civil War’s Rotten Tomatoes score?
A reliable current Tomatometer percentage and critic-review count are not available from Rotten Tomatoes’ retrieved film page. Because the score can change as reviews are added or the review count fluctuates, an older figure should not be presented as current. Check the live page for the percentage and review count, and date the figure if reporting it.
What the Tomatometer measures
The Tomatometer is the percentage of professional critic reviews that Rotten Tomatoes classifies as positive. It is not an average star rating, nor is it the audience Popcornmeter. Rotten Tomatoes describes scores as fluid, so a percentage is a snapshot of the reviews counted at a particular time. Its score explanation outlines the distinction between the critic and audience measures.
Does Civil War prove Alex Garland has a 22-year hot streak?
That claim is not established by the available evidence. Confirming it would require a defined list of Garland’s eligible directing or writing credits, the first and last films in the proposed period, and verified Rotten Tomatoes scores for each. Without those details, the “22-year hot streak” framing should not be treated as fact. The evidence also does not establish whether Civil War is Garland’s highest-rated film.

What is Civil War about?
Written and directed by Garland, Civil War depicts a near-future United States ravaged by conflict. Photographer Lee, played by Kirsten Dunst, travels toward Washington, D.C., with fellow journalists hoping to reach the president before his tenure ends. The BFI synopsis describes the journey and its central characters; A24’s film page identifies it as a 2024 release.
Garland has said that genre films give him a way to respond to technology, shifts in public mood, and global politics, and that writing screenplays helps him process those concerns. In an April 11, 2024 BFI interview, he discussed that approach. The film is better understood as engaging with anxieties than as a prediction: the Associated Press reported Garland called its scenario “just a possibility.”

Why does the film center journalists?
Garland told the Guardian: “I think serious journalism needs protecting, because it’s under attack, so I wanted to make those people ‘heroes’ to put them front and centre.” The March 30, 2024 Guardian interview connects that stated intention to the film’s focus on reporters working amid lethal conditions.
How did critics respond?
Rotten Tomatoes’ SXSW first-reviews roundup includes differing reactions, not a complete account of all criticism. Some reviewers praised the film’s visual design, urgency, and potential to provoke discussion; others faulted its characterization, narrative focus, or political ambiguity.

Those disagreements can be read through three useful questions, rather than treated as a formal scoring system:
- Does the visual craft and visceral immersion make the journey compelling?
- Does the political ambiguity feel productive, or does it seem evasive?
- Do the journalists’ emotional arcs carry the story’s premise?
