In his April 14, 2024 BGR review, Andy Meek says Alex Garland’s Civil War did not scare him as he expected—and left him disappointed. He had anticipated a political cautionary tale about a strongman presidency and a country breaking apart. Instead, he found a combat thriller and road movie focused on war journalists, with too little explanation of the conflict’s causes and factions. That is one critic’s response, not a measure of how audiences generally reacted.
What is Civil War about?
Alex Garland’s 2024 film follows war journalists traveling through a fractured near-future America. A24 describes it as “An adrenaline-fueled thrill ride through a near-future fractured America balanced on the razor’s edge.” The cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman. A24’s official film page provides the synopsis and cast information.

Meek characterizes the movie as an abstract combat thriller and road movie. The journalists’ journey puts viewers amid violence and social collapse, but, in his reading, offers little context about who is fighting or why.
Why did Meek find the film disappointing?
The gap between expectation and what he says the film delivers is central to his verdict. Meek expected a political warning: a story that would trace how a strongman presidency and institutional breakdown could push people into opposing camps. He says the film instead shows the fighting without developing that political history or the factions’ motivations.

- A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor's edge.
For him, the result hints at a larger story without telling it. His disappointment is therefore not simply that the film is violent or bleak; it is that the violence does not come with the explanatory framework he wanted. This is Meek’s interpretation of the film, not an established statement of Garland’s intent.
What did scare him?
“Didn’t scare me at all” is not a claim that the film contains nothing disturbing. Meek singles out an encounter in which the journalists come upon soldiers dumping bodies into a pit as the scene that genuinely rattled him, and he highlights Jesse Plemons’s performance in it. His broader complaint is that this moment of horror does not make the film’s wider conflict clearer.

In a separate encounter at a theme park, a fighter explains the immediate logic of the violence: “Nobody’s giving us orders, man,” one of the fighters in the theme park scene says to the journalists hunkered nearby. “Someone’s trying to kill us. And we are trying to kill them.” Meek quotes the exchange as part of his review; it conveys a state of mutual danger, but does not supply the factional history he says he wanted.
