Citadel: Honey Bunny is worth watching if you want Indian-set spy action with a strong character and relationship at its center—not a puzzle-box espionage plot. Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Honey gives the six-episode series its emotional anchor, while its 1990s Hindi-film setting distinguishes it from the franchise’s broader spy mythology. You can start here without watching the original Citadel; the connection matters most for the story of Honey and Bunny’s daughter, Nadia.

What is Citadel: Honey Bunny about?

This one-season Indian series follows Bunny, a stuntman who recruits aspiring actress Honey for a side job. Their work draws them into espionage, action and betrayal. Years later, they reunite to protect their young daughter, Nadia. Prime Video’s listing describes the story in those terms and lists six episodes, along with bonus featurettes: Prime Video’s series listing.

The story spans 1992 to 2000, following Honey from aspiring performer to agent and mother. That personal progression gives the series a more intimate center than a spy-agency origin story alone would suggest. Its romance and family stakes sit alongside the action rather than replacing it.

Does the Indian setting make the series distinctive?

Yes. The 1990s Hindi-film milieu gives Honey Bunny a local texture: Honey’s ambitions are rooted in the film industry, and references to the period’s cinema help place the characters in a specific cultural world. EL PAÍS situates the show within Raj & DK’s genre-mixing work and describes it as a locally rooted branch of the international franchise: EL PAÍS on the Indian prequel.

#1 Best Overall

The series still belongs to Citadel’s international spy framework, but its strongest identity comes from the characters’ lives and setting. The local detail feels more persuasive as a foundation for Honey’s story than as decoration for franchise lore.

How well do the performances and plot work?

Samantha Ruth Prabhu anchors the story

Prabhu plays Honey, with Varun Dhawan as Bunny and Kay Kay Menon among the principal cast. The arc gives Honey room to change across the story’s years, and Prabhu’s performance is the element most often singled out in the available review. About Amazon India’s Sarita A. Tanwar calls Honey the series’ heart and praises the performance, while also noting that the writing could use more tension. Because About Amazon is Amazon’s own publication, its assessment is a publisher-hosted view, not independent critical consensus: Tanwar’s review at About Amazon India.

The character drama is stronger than the surprises

The series combines action, romantic drama, betrayal and family conflict. That mix gives it a deliberately melodramatic, sometimes “soapy” quality; viewers who enjoy heightened emotions alongside spy set pieces may find that part of its appeal. The trade-off is that the central plot can feel predictable. Tanwar’s review praises the ambition but argues that more intrigue and tension would have helped. The available sources do not establish a broad critical consensus, so the fairest verdict is specific: the character arc and action are strengths, while the plotting may not satisfy viewers seeking intricate twists.

Do you need to watch Citadel first?

No. Bunny’s recruitment of Honey and their later effort to protect Nadia provide a clear entry point. The franchise connection adds context rather than functioning as a prerequisite. EL PAÍS identifies Honey Bunny as a prequel that supplies the Indian childhood backstory of Nadia Sinh, played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the original Citadel. If you have seen the original, that link gives Nadia’s history added significance; if not, you can follow the family-and-espionage story on its own.

The wider franchise uses connected stories made in different countries and languages, built around the spy agency Citadel and its enemy Manticore. You do not need a franchise study guide to understand this series: its emotional stakes are Honey, Bunny and Nadia, not a checklist of prior lore.

That is a reported integration plan, not a description of what appears in season two.
