Neelam, Vinod Talwar, Dilip Gulati and Kishan Shah—returning to filmmaking. Its central pleasure is watching people often dismissed by mainstream film culture reclaim the word “filmmaker,” while its account of their work also acknowledges the industry’s sensational and exploitative edges.
What is Cinema Marte Dum Tak about?
Created by Vasan Bala, the Hindi documentary series brings four directors associated with 1990s pulp cinema back to the sets. They revisit their careers and make new short films; interviews, recollections and archival clips place the exercise in the context of the films and production culture that shaped them. Disha Randani, Xulfee and Kulish Kant Thakur directed the episodes.
Prime Video lists one season of six episodes. The series is less a conventional survey of film history than a meeting with the people who made films on its margins: their memories, collaborators, home lives and uncertain careers are part of the story alongside the movies themselves.
Why the series feels affectionate—and not uncritical
In her Scroll review, Nandini Ramnath emphasizes the directors’ pleasure at returning to filmmaking and their desire to be seen as filmmakers rather than reduced to pejorative labels. The show gives them room to speak about their work and the conditions around it, instead of treating pulp cinema simply as a curiosity to mock.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That warmth does not erase the industry’s troubling aspects. Ramnath discusses “bits”—pornographic clips inserted into theatrical prints—as part of the scene’s notoriety. This is an account of a practice described in the review and by the show’s subjects, not evidence that it applied to every film or filmmaker. The tension matters: the series can value these directors’ ingenuity and pleasure in filmmaking while recognizing that the business around their films could be exploitative.
Other reviews offer useful, but still subjective, points of comparison. Kartik Bhardwaj gave the series 3.5/5 in Cinema Express and described its treatment of the directors as sympathetic. Alaka Sahani called it an earnest attempt to document cinema on the margins in The Indian Express, while also noting the genre’s uneven craft, sensational conventions and appeal to its audience. These are critics’ assessments, not a measure of audience consensus.

The pulp-film world behind the reunion
The films discussed in the series belong to a parallel, often stigmatized strand of Hindi cinema. Horror, action, revenge, erotic material and sensational plots could all be part of its vocabulary. Ramnath connects some of the directors’ influences to the Ramsay brothers and describes J. Neelam and Vinod Talwar among filmmakers working in that orbit. The series’ historical value lies partly in making room for a film culture that mainstream accounts can overlook.
The Indian Express reports participants and industry observers recalling productions made for budgets as low as Rs 2 lakh and completed within a week. That is a reported recollection, not an industry-wide average or a verified statistic for all pulp films. It nevertheless helps explain the low-budget, fast-schedule context often associated with this filmmaking tradition.
