A CIA tip contributed to Austrian authorities’ disruption of an alleged attack plot against Taylor Swift’s Vienna concerts in August 2024. The concerts were canceled after authorities reported the threat. The latest legal update in the cited coverage came on February 16, 2026, when Austrian prosecutors filed terrorism-related charges against a 21-year-old defendant; the report described allegations, not a conviction.
What was the CIA tip about?
In August 2024, CIA Deputy Director David Cohen said intelligence discovered by the agency helped disrupt planning for an attack on Swift’s Vienna shows and led to arrests. The reports describe alleged links to the Islamic State group. Cohen’s account establishes the CIA’s public explanation of its role, but the specific intelligence and how it was passed to Austrian authorities were not disclosed in the cited coverage. Then-White House national security spokesman John Kirby later described information sharing with Austrian partners as enabling disruption of the threat. The Associated Press reproduced his statement in its February 2026 report: “The United States has an enduring focus on our counterterrorism mission. We work closely with partners all over the world to monitor and disrupt threats. And so as part of that work, the United States did share information with Austrian partners to enable the disruption of a threat to Taylor Swift’s concerts there in Vienna.” This confirms the public account of cooperation, not the operational contents of the tip. Why were the Vienna concerts canceled?
Swift’s Eras Tour was scheduled to play Vienna on August 8, 9 and 10, 2024. Austrian authorities reported a planned attack at the stadium, and organizer Barracuda Music canceled all three shows. The decision came close to showtime. Chancellor Karl Nehammer said “a tragedy was prevented,” according to Reuters’ contemporaneous report. Reuters via Investing.com, Aug. 7, 2024

What was alleged about the plot’s intended toll?
Cohen characterized the plotters’ alleged intent as involving “tens of thousands” of potential victims, as reported by PBS NewsHour / Associated Press in August 2024. That phrase is an attributed estimate of alleged intent, not a verified casualty count. The cited coverage establishes no independently verified figure for how many people might have been killed, and no casualties from an attack at the concerts were reported in these accounts.
