The band’s music does not claim to speak for every Puerto Rican; rather, its members draw on ordinary experience to make private feelings legible as social concerns.
Who are Chuwi?
Chuwi is a four-member group rooted in Isabela, Puerto Rico: vocalist Lorén Aldarondo, Willy (Wilfredo) Aldarondo, Wester Aldarondo and Adrián López. Reporting on the band describes a sound shaped by Puerto Rican and wider Caribbean traditions, while its members have connected their writing to what they encounter in everyday life. In an interview with NME, Lorén described the group’s early songs as growing out of what they were experiencing in ordinary life; Rolling Stone en Español likewise discusses the relationship between social music and emotion. These accounts point to an approach formed through experience, not a single declared political platform.
How does Chuwi bring Caribbean traditions into a contemporary sound?
The music moves between inherited forms and present-day production. Coverage identifies bomba, plena and salsa among its reference points. El Track also describes traces of bolero, música jíbara, Dominican palo and merengue, set alongside synthesizers, bass and occasional rap. This mix matters: the traditions are not presented as a sealed-off past, but as materials that can change shape in contemporary songs.
Willy described the aim to Rolling Stone en Español: “quería escuchar música caribeña real y no simplemente algunas derivaciones, hacer música del Caribe real, pero con los sonidos de hoy en día” (“I wanted to hear real Caribbean music, not simply some derivations—to make real music of the Caribbean, but with the sounds of today”). The statement captures the band’s musical axis: a commitment to Caribbean forms alongside modern arrangement, rather than a choice between tradition and current sound.

What does Tierra say about home and leaving?
In coverage of the EP Tierra, home and land emerge as recurring ways to think about belonging, departure and uncertainty. The songs’ emotional questions include what it means to belong to a place and what happens when staying there feels unsettled. El Track describes lyrics that confront displacement and the dilemma of Puerto Ricans moving to the United States. That is reporting on themes in the band’s work, not a claim that every song has one fixed meaning.
Gentrification and displacement are also specifically identified in reporting on Chuwi. La Opinión says the group sings about residents being displaced in Puerto Rico as a result of gentrification; El Track includes gentrification among the themes in its lyrics. Heard in that context, the tension around home is not only personal: a song about attachment to land can also raise questions about who gets to remain and what forces unsettle that bond.

Why does “Guerra” describe anxiety as existential?
Lorén Aldarondo put the feeling directly in an interview with Rolling Stone en Español on March 4, 2025: “Guerra es la ansiedad de existir en este mundo” (“‘Guerra’ is the anxiety of existing in this world,” translated from Spanish). The line widens anxiety beyond a single private worry. It frames unease as part of living in a world marked by pressure and uncertainty, while leaving listeners to connect that feeling to their own circumstances.
That openness is part of the band’s approach to meaning. In an El Track interview on September 22, 2025, Lorén said: “Y luego de escucharlo pues, que tomen sus propias conclusiones, aunque no sean las de nosotros” (“And then, after listening, they can draw their own conclusions, even if they are not ours,” translated from Spanish). Rather than prescribe one interpretation, Chuwi lets intimate emotion meet listeners’ own readings.

How does personal unease become a wider Puerto Rican story?
Chuwi’s music connects private feelings—anxiety, attachment and the possibility of leaving—with reported public concerns such as gentrification and displacement. Its hybrid sound offers a parallel: Caribbean traditions remain audible while contemporary production brings them into the present. Together, those choices allow songs to hold both closeness and instability without suggesting that one band can represent the full range of Puerto Rican experience.
La Opinión quoted Lorén describing a message the group has carried since its beginnings: “Creo que una de las razones principales por la cual nos contactó [Bad Bunny] para colaborar es un mensaje, un discurso que llevamos desde el principio de nuestra vida como banda” (“I think one of the main reasons [Bad Bunny] contacted us to collaborate is a message, a discourse we have carried since the beginning of our life as a band,” translated from Spanish). The comment situates the band’s work as an ongoing conversation. Its songs can invite a broader reading of Puerto Rico’s anxieties while leaving room for listeners to decide what the music means to them.
