In his farewell message, he presented the departure as the start of an entrepreneurial chapter focused on rebuilding trust through local journalism, not as a single-issue resignation. He said The Chuck ToddCast would continue from a new home while he considered other projects.
Why did Chuck Todd leave NBC News?
Todd’s public explanation emphasized what he wanted to build next rather than naming one event as the cause of his exit. His farewell memo argued that national media cannot restore public trust without strong local partners and that new, entrepreneurial approaches are needed. He also wrote that journalists should not pursue popularity or act as activists simply to win approval.
The Associated Press reported that January 31, 2025, was Todd’s final day at NBC News. The network said it was grateful for his nearly two decades of political coverage and his commitment to Meet the Press.
What did Todd say about the state of cable news?
In a Mediaite interview published April 14, 2025, Todd described much of cable news as an effort to maximize distribution rather than explain events. “Most cable news felt like a whole bunch of people trying to game an algorithm,” he said. “It stopped being informational.”

His criticism draws a line between journalism designed to inform and programming optimized for attention. In his view, chasing algorithmic reach can reward conflict, speed and personality at the expense of sustained reporting and context.
Why does Todd emphasize local journalism?
Todd said national outlets have never enjoyed broad public trust, while audiences often trusted local journalists because they knew them personally. He called local news “the glue of a community” and said the country needs “a thousand new local outlets.”
That proposal is central to his stated next chapter: national organizations would work with or be complemented by locally rooted reporting, rather than expecting a single large network to repair trust on its own.
Did the Ronna McDaniel controversy cause his departure?
Todd was one of the NBC figures who publicly criticized the network’s proposed hiring of Ronna McDaniel, the former Republican National Committee chair. After backlash, NBC reversed the offer.

The dispute is part of the context surrounding Todd’s final months at NBC, but the available reporting does not establish that it was the sole or official reason he left. His own farewell explanation focused on entrepreneurship, local journalism and restoring trust, without identifying the McDaniel episode as the trigger.
