Its Christmas setting is less about festive cheer than the strain of addiction, loneliness, family estrangement and the difficult work of forgiveness.
What is Christmess about?
Chris Flint, once a successful actor, is newly out of rehabilitation and making ends meet as Santa in a suburban shopping centre. When he encounters his estranged daughter, Joy, he has a reason to try to stay sober and repair their relationship. The story also follows Nick and other people in recovery as they navigate the holiday season. ABC’s review describes the film’s setting as western Sydney and highlights its attention to loneliness and the slow process of recovery and forgiveness (ABC News, 10 December 2023).
The result is not a conventional feel-good Christmas movie. Davis described his aim as addressing the pressures many people experience during the holidays, including stress, anxiety, economic struggle and alcohol abuse (Variety, 4 October 2023).
Cast and filmmakers
- Steve Le Marquand plays Chris Flint.
- Hannah Joy plays Joy. Variety reported that the film was her feature-film acting debut and that she contributed original music.
- Darren Gilshenan plays Nick.
- Heath Davis wrote and directed the film.
Brick Studios and Crash House Productions produced Christmess; Bonsai Films handled distribution, according to Variety’s release report. The evidence establishes Le Marquand as the lead actor, but does not establish a Perth connection beyond the wording sometimes used to introduce him. (Variety; Brick Studios)
