Russian Orthodox Christmas is observed on January 7 in the Gregorian calendar—December 25 in the Julian, or “old-style,” calendar. Church services mark the religious feast; separate regional folk customs, including caroling during Christmastide, belong to a broader seasonal tradition and should not be treated as practices followed by every Russian family today.
When is Christmas in Russia?
The Russian Orthodox Church’s 2026 calendar identifies the Nativity of Christ as January 7 and gives December 25 as its date in the Julian calendar. The difference reflects the calendars used to express the feast date; it does not mean that Orthodox Christmas is a different religious feast from Christmas observed on December 25 elsewhere.
January 7 is the Gregorian-calendar date relevant to the Church’s 2026 entry. The church calendar’s dual dating is the clearest way to distinguish the date from the older calendar reference.
How does the Russian Orthodox Church observe the feast?
Christmas Eve vigil and Christmas liturgy
The Church’s 2026 service instructions describe an all-night vigil on the eve of the feast, comprising great compline and matins, followed by the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom. These are the services set out in the liturgical calendar; that source does not establish how many individual people attend them.

The Nativity Fast
In the same instructions, the Nativity Fast extends to Christmas, and fasting is lifted from Christmas through Theophany. This describes Orthodox fasting practice, not the habits of all residents of Russia or all people who identify as Orthodox.
What is Christmastide, or Святки?
Святки (Svyatki), commonly rendered in English as Christmastide, is the seasonal period from Christmas to Epiphany. The Russian National Museum of Music describes folk practices during this stretch as varying by region and social group. That distinction matters: a custom recorded in a particular place or community is not evidence that it is universal, or that it is routinely observed in contemporary households.

What is kolyadovanie?
Коля́дование (kolyadovanie) is a form of seasonal home-visiting and caroling documented in accounts of Russian Christmastide customs. Groups visited homes with songs and well-wishes; some carried a star and sang both church hymns and folk carols. The museum’s description presents different local patterns rather than one standard ritual.
Regional differences in songs and timing
The museum reports that in southern areas groups might sing the Christmas troparion, while central-region repertoires could combine Christian hymns and carols. It also distinguishes Christmas caroling from New Year visits and songs. Timing, participants, and repertoire differed by region and group, so these examples illustrate variety rather than a single national script.

Kolyadki, the carols
Коля́дки (kolyadki) are Russian carols associated with winter Christmastide and New Year. The National Centre Russia describes them as part of the country’s cultural legacy. The term refers to the songs; kolyadovanie refers to the practice of going from home to home singing them and offering seasonal wishes.

No single set of household customs follows from the religious calendar or the regional folk descriptions. The cultural accounts document music and seasonal rites, not a measure of how widely people practice them today. They also do not establish a representative national Christmas Eve menu or a fixed number of traditional dishes. The fast’s place in Orthodox observance should not be mistaken for proof that every household keeps it or eats one standard meal.
