The family first learned something might be wrong when doctors noticed an issue in his blood tests while he was being treated for shigella, Teigen had previously said. That account describes when the diagnosis was discovered; it does not establish that shigella caused Type 1 diabetes.
What Chrissy Teigen has said about Miles’s diagnosis
In August 2024, Teigen publicly confirmed Miles’s diagnosis after people noticed a glucose monitor in a family photo from the Paris Olympics. The Bump reported that Miles had been hospitalized with shigella when doctors noticed something else was off in his blood tests. Further testing led to the Type 1 diabetes diagnosis, according to the family’s account as reported by the outlet.
Teigen described the family’s first insulin injection in a social post quoted by The Bump: “Last night we gave him his first shot of insulin and here we go! A different, new world for us and we are certainly learning so much on the fly.”
In her June 2025 Women’s Health interview, Teigen reflected on the first year after the diagnosis and the family’s adjustment. She said Miles had not shown typical symptoms and that the diagnosis was unexpected. “We were thrown into this world of chaos and had to learn so much all at once,” she said.

Why Teigen raised the question of screening
Teigen said she wanted families to know more about screening for Type 1 diabetes. In the Women’s Health interview, she recalled thinking that if one child in a family has Type 1, the rest of the family should be screened: “It was so wild to me,” she said. “It seemed like such a simple segue. Like, okay, Miles has it—well, then your whole family should get screened, right?” She also asked why she and the rest of her family had not been encouraged to seek screening earlier.
Women’s Health identified Teigen as a paid Sanofi spokesperson in the feature. Her comments reflect her personal experience and advocacy, not independent medical guidance or a recommendation for a particular screening test.

What Type 1 diabetes is—and what the diagnosis account does not establish
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease: the immune system destroys pancreatic cells that make insulin. Most people with Type 1 need insulin every day to manage blood glucose and stay alive, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
The family account says doctors noticed an issue during blood testing around Miles’s shigella hospitalization, followed by further testing. It does not say that shigella caused the autoimmune disease. A diagnosis may involve symptoms, medical history and tests; blood glucose tests establish diabetes, while autoantibody tests may help determine whether it is Type 1, NIDDK explains.

Symptoms, support and when to seek medical help
Possible Type 1 diabetes symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst or hunger, fatigue, blurred vision and unexplained weight loss. In children, symptoms can develop quickly over days or weeks, according to NIDDK. Teigen’s account that Miles did not show typical symptoms illustrates why a single family story should not be used to rule the condition in or out.
For people newly diagnosed, diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) can help patients and families learn about managing insulin, food and activity, as well as address emotional challenges. The CDC’s guidance for people newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes describes this kind of support. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious, potentially life-threatening complication that requires immediate medical care. Anyone concerned about symptoms, screening or care should speak with a qualified health professional.

How common Type 1 diabetes is in the United States
NIDDK’s page, last reviewed in February 2025, cites 2021 estimates: about 1.7 million U.S. adults aged 20 or older with Type 1 diabetes were taking insulin, representing 5.7% of adults with diagnosed diabetes; about 304,000 U.S. children and teens younger than 20 had Type 1 diabetes. NIDDK also cites the American Diabetes Association’s 2024 Standards of Care for the estimate that 5% to 10% of people with diabetes have Type 1. These are historical figures, not 2026 estimates.
