The sequel’s status and the reason it stalled are separate questions: December 2022 reports said the Patty Jenkins–directed, Gal Gadot–starring film was not moving forward, while accounts of Jenkins’s departure were disputed.
What Chris Pine reportedly said about Wonder Woman 3
In entertainment coverage published May 6–7, 2024, Pine was described as surprised that the planned third film had been stopped. The coverage summarized an interview conducted during promotion for Poolman; the original interview is the appropriate source for his exact words. Because the available reporting does not establish a verified verbatim quote, it is safer to describe his reaction rather than put a sentence in quotation marks. Business Insider’s interview and the interview coverage are the relevant references.
That surprise does not mean Pine expected to be in the film. The same coverage said he did not anticipate returning as Steve Trevor. Pine played the character opposite Gadot in the earlier films, including Wonder Woman 1984.
Why was Wonder Woman 3 halted?
In December 2022, the Los Angeles Times reported that Warner Bros. was not moving forward with the planned Jenkins-directed, Gadot-starring sequel. That established the project’s reported status at the time, not a single uncontested explanation for how it reached that point. The Los Angeles Times report described the project as not moving forward.

Reports about studio notes and Jenkins’s departure conflicted
TheWrap later reported, citing unnamed sources, that Jenkins walked away after rejecting studio notes. Jenkins publicly disputed that version, saying she had not walked away. The competing accounts should therefore be treated as contested: the reporting does not establish that one explanation is definitively settled. TheWrap’s account and the Los Angeles Times coverage of Jenkins’s response document the disagreement.
Was the announced Wonder Woman prequel the third movie?
No. In January 2023, DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran presented a slate that included a Wonder Woman prequel. That was a separate announced project; it did not confirm that the planned Jenkins-Gadot Wonder Woman 3 would continue. The Associated Press covered the slate and its prequel announcement: AP’s report on the DC slate.

Wonder Woman 1984 is the relevant film to revisit for Pine’s Steve Trevor. It is a released earlier entry, not a substitute version of Wonder Woman 3. There are no two released versions of the planned third film to compare. DC’s film page provides context for Wonder Woman 1984.
