By December, Us Weekly reported that the pair were “definitely dating,” citing the Los Angeles dinner and a trip to Israel. The exact date their relationship began has never been publicly established. 2018: The relationship becomes more visible

In September, Johnson told Tatler that she was “very happy” with Martin. Reports also claimed that the pair had matching infinity tattoos. The tattoo story, like predictions at the time that they might become engaged, came from entertainment coverage and was not independently confirmed by the couple.

Martin and Johnson were photographed together in Malibu in April 2019. Two months later, entertainment outlets reported that they had separated after approximately 18 months together.

In February 2021, People-based reporting said Johnson and Martin had been living together at Martin’s Malibu home for several months. The same period of coverage associated Johnson with a vintage Ford Mustang reportedly bought for her by Martin. These were entertainment reports, not independently verified property or financial records.
The emerald ring renewed engagement speculation in March. Still, wearing the ring did not constitute a public confirmation that the couple were engaged.
Johnson offered one of the clearest descriptions of their domestic routine in a December 2021 interview with Elle. She said that they enjoyed staying home and being cozy because both had demanding work schedules. Johnson attended another Coldplay show in Pasadena in October 2023 with her mother, Melanie Griffith. The engagement was reported through sources close to the couple, rather than announced jointly by Martin and Johnson. There was no publicly announced wedding date and no evidence of a public wedding. The most accurate wording is that they were privately reported to be engaged.
June–August 2024: Conflicting breakup reports
In June 2024, a People-sourced report said that Martin and Johnson had experienced “ups and downs” but were “definitely back on.” Johnson was subsequently seen attending Martin’s Glastonbury performance with Apple and Moses.
On August 16, an anonymous-source report claimed that the couple had broken up and that the relationship could not be sustained long term. Within hours, however, Johnson’s representative denied the reports to E! and other outlets, saying that Martin and Johnson were happily together.
Because the claims directly contradicted one another, the August 2024 breakup should not be presented as an established event. The public record at that point showed conflicting reports, followed by a representative’s denial.

December 2024: Martin explains why he kept the relationship private
In an interview published by Rolling Stone in December 2024, Martin declined to discuss the relationship in detail. He said romantic love was important but that it felt right to keep the relationship private because it was not solely his story to tell.

On June 4, 2025, People-based reporting said that Martin and Johnson had broken up after nearly eight years together, on and off. One source told the publication, “It feels final this time.” Vanity Fair, E! and other outlets also reported the split.
The report came shortly after the pair had been seen together in Malibu, illustrating how little of their private status was directly documented. Martin also publicly promoted Johnson’s film Materialists at a Coldplay concert around the same period, encouraging the audience to see it.
That gesture does not disprove the breakup report. It is more responsibly understood as evidence that Martin remained supportive or cordial toward Johnson around the transition, not as proof that they had reconciled.
