Its fifth-place ranking applies to the worldwide box office for all films, not to animation alone. The figures behind those rankings come from different dates and reporting sources, so each needs its own cutoff.
What record does Ne Zha 2 hold?
Guinness World Records identifies Ne Zha 2 as the highest-grossing animated film. Its record entry, citing The Numbers, gives a worldwide total of 14,265,482,649 yuan—US$1,989,046,691 or £1,449,352,685—as of June 30, 2025. Guinness World Records’ entry cautions that records can change daily and may not be published immediately, so this is a dated record figure rather than a guaranteed live total.

A later retrospective from China’s film authority reports 15.949 billion yuan in global box office for 2025, ranking the film fifth worldwide among all films and first among animated films. The China Film Administration’s January 12, 2026 report is the source for that later total and ranking.
Why the “fifth-biggest animated hit” wording is misleading
“Fifth” and “highest-grossing animated film” describe different charts. The fifth-place rank is among films of every kind worldwide; the animation ranking puts Ne Zha 2 first. Calling it the fifth-biggest animated hit collapses those categories and gives the wrong impression.

How the film broke China’s single-market record
The worldwide ranking is distinct from the early record set in China. A China Film Administration report reproducing Xinhua coverage said that by 9 p.m. on February 7, 2025, Ne Zha 2 had passed 6.7922 billion yuan in China, including presales—about US$950 million at the conversion given in that report. It surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ North American gross in that comparison. The film passed 7 billion yuan by February 8, according to the same account. These were running totals during its release, not the later worldwide figures. The February 17, 2025 China Film Administration report supplies the dated figures and presales qualification.

Ne Zha 2 draws on traditional Chinese mythology. In its account of the film, the China Film Administration highlights the use of traditional cultural elements and says the design of the Jiejiashou creatures drew inspiration from bronze figures at the Sanxingdui and Jinsha archaeological sites. That is the official report’s description of the imagery, not a complete critical interpretation of the film.
Director Jiaozi said, in translation, “Animated films need to integrate China’s excellent traditional culture, and even more, they need to present a youthful expression of traditional culture.” Liu Wenzhang, CEO of Chengdu Coco Cartoon and producer of the series, said, in translation, “We incorporated many cultural elements into the film’s creation, leaving a deep impression on audiences.” Both statements appear in the China Film Administration’s February 17, 2025 report.

A 2026 memorandum in the Journal of Chinese Film Studies describes 324 million admissions as a single-film record since China’s film-industry reform and marketization deepened. That is a scholarly summary, not an independently verified ticketing-database figure. The publication also discusses the film in the context of China’s 2025 film industry; its admissions figure should not be substituted for a gross or treated as a like-for-like comparison with the currency totals above. The 2026 memorandum is the source for that characterization.
The Associated Press called Ne Zha 2 the highest-grossing movie of 2025 in a December 14, 2025 report and described it as earning nearly US$2 billion in China alone. That annual and China-only framing is different from a worldwide all-time ranking. The AP report provides that year-end context.
